An older cart-based echo platform that still does real work — provided you buy the probes and the service path along with it.

The GE Vivid 7 is a cart-based cardiovascular ultrasound platform built for echocardiography — adult and pediatric cardiac imaging, vascular studies and stress echo. It is an older generation than the Vivid Q and the current Vivid line, and it reaches the used market at a point in its life where the buying decision is genuinely different from a newer system.

Bought carefully, a Vivid 7 gives a practice, a training program or a veterinary cardiology service full cart-based echo capability. Bought carelessly, it becomes a large object that cannot be serviced.

What to establish before anything else

Service path. This is the question that matters more on a Vivid 7 than on anything newer. Confirm, before purchase, that a service provider will support the system where it is going and that parts remain obtainable. A platform of this generation with no service path is a short-term purchase regardless of its condition.

Probes. The transducers carry most of the cost. Establish exactly which are included by model number, and get photographs of each lens face and cable.

Licensed packages. Cardiac quantification, strain and stress echo capabilities are options tied to the machine. Ask which are enabled against the serial number.

Known failure points

Probe condition. Lens delamination and cable strain are the two failures that matter, and both are visible in a good photograph if you ask for one.

TEE probe integrity. If included, inspect the shaft for bite damage and ask about electrical leakage testing history. This is the single most expensive component to replace.

Cooling fans and dust. Cart systems of this age accumulate dust in the fan paths. Ask when the system was last opened and cleaned; thermal problems present as intermittent faults that are hard to diagnose after delivery.

Hard drive and archive. Older cart systems store studies locally. Confirm the drive is healthy and understand that any patient data left on it is the seller's responsibility to remove before shipment — ask them to confirm they have.

Monitor condition. Check for burn-in, dead regions and brightness falloff.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

  • Identify a service provider that supports the platform where it is going, before buying
  • List every included probe by model number and get lens and cable photographs
  • Inspect any TEE probe carefully and ask about leakage testing history
  • Confirm which software packages are enabled against the serial number
  • Ask for exported sample images rather than screen photographs
  • Confirm the seller has removed any patient data from the system
  • Check the monitor for burn-in and dead regions
  • Confirm the power cord, probe holders and any printer are included
  • Measure the full delivery route — this is a cart, not a portable
