Stryker reaches the US secondary market in three streams: endoscopic imaging — camera control units, camera heads, light sources and rigid scopes; surgical power — the System family of handpieces with their saws, drills, reamers and attachments; and orthopedic instrument sets built around a particular implant line. This page covers what circulates, what goes wrong with it, and what an overseas buyer settles before a crate moves.

What comes to market

Imaging is the largest stream by unit count. Stryker's HD camera platforms went into hospital operating rooms and surgery centers in enormous numbers, and they come out as facilities move to 4K towers. A tower is almost always broken up on the way out: console, camera heads, light source, cables, couplers and scopes get listed separately by different sellers, which makes matching the buyer's problem.

Power is the second stream. Battery handpieces with their sagittal saws, drills, reamers and wire drivers cycle out when a hospital refreshes its power inventory or closes a service line. Handpieces routinely get separated from their batteries, chargers and aseptic transfer housings, so a lot described as a set is often partial.

Orthopedic and spine trays are the third. These leave when a facility converts to another implant vendor, or when an implant generation retires and its broaches, rasps, trials and inserters no longer have an implant to serve. Trays usually arrive complete, since sterile processing manages them as counted sets — but they only help a buyer still implanting that system.

Condition sorts into three grades. As-removed means decontaminated and pulled from service, powered on at most. Function-tested means the seller has run it: image on a monitor, handpiece under load, battery through a charge cycle. Refurbished means work was performed — a re-terminated camera cable, a rebuilt handpiece, a replaced lamp module, new cells. Ask what was done and by whom; FDA treats servicing and remanufacturing differently, and work that alters performance or intended use falls on the remanufacturing side.

What to check before buying used

  • Camera head and console generation. This is the classic used-market mistake. Stryker heads are matched to the console generation they shipped with. A head from one platform will not give a usable image on a console from another, in many pairings gives nothing at all, and often will not seat in the socket. Read the model marking on head and console and confirm they name the same platform before anything else — sourcing the halves from two sellers without checking is how buyers end up with two boxes that do nothing.
  • Coupler, focus and cable. Turn the focus ring through its full travel feeling for grit or a dead zone; the clamp should hold a scope eyecup without letting it rotate, and the coupler window should be unscratched. Flex the cable slowly while watching a live image and look for dropout — steam cycles crack the strain relief boot long before they kill a sensor.
  • Reprocessing history of the head. Ask how it was sterilized. A soak-only head that was autoclaved shows haze behind the window and corroded connector pins.
  • Light source and cables. Identify the lamp type and ask for the hour reading if the unit keeps one; xenon output drops well before a lamp fails, so a bulb that lights proves little. Look into the far end of every light cable held up to a light — dark speckling is broken fiber, and a depleted bundle makes any camera look bad.
  • Rigid scopes. Look through the eyepiece at printed text: overall blur, a yellow cast or a crescent missing from the field means rod-lens or fiber damage. Check the distal window for chips and sight down the shaft — a bent arthroscope will not pass its cannula cleanly.
  • Batteries and housings. Cells are consumables; ask their age, and remember a pack showing a full indicator can still sag under load. Confirm the aseptic transfer housings, covers and charger are present, or the handpiece cannot reach the sterile field as instructed.
  • Handpieces under load. Run each with an attachment fitted: listen for bearing noise, feel for runout at the shaft, check it does not heat abnormally, and confirm the trigger returns.
  • Chucks and attachments. Seat a blade, bur, drill bit and pin in every chuck the set includes and confirm each locks and releases. Saw blade fixation wears at the slot and lets blades walk, which shows as vibration.
  • Sterilization parameters. Check each handpiece, attachment and case against the current instructions for use; older power cases sometimes call for cycles your sterile processing department does not run.
  • Trays and serial numbers. Ask for the count sheet and the implant generation the tray serves, and inspect broaches for rounded teeth and inserters for damaged threads. Take serials off equipment labels, not listing text.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Sellers here are US-based, and Stryker equipment normally changes hands FOB or FCA at a named US point — a dock, a port, a freight terminal — with your forwarder carrying it onward. Settle the named place, who loads, and who books carriage before anything is agreed.

Paperwork that usually accompanies a shipment: commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin statement, and whatever instructions for use or service records the seller holds. Two things do not travel with a US-market device — a transferable manufacturer warranty, and EU CE marking. US clearance is not a conformity mark where you are.

Three points are specific to this brand. Consoles, light sources and chargers are built for US mains supply, so read the input rating on the rear label against your own supply and frequency. Lithium-ion packs are restricted dangerous goods by air: your forwarder must classify, mark and pack them, and some carriers refuse them outright. Imaging consoles carry firmware whose video outputs may not suit the monitors you run.

Confirm with your own customs and health authority before committing:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported at all, and whether an age limit or prior authorization applies.
  • Whether the device class must be registered nationally before it can clear.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment is required for capital equipment.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is demanded. Both are obtained on the US side and should be arranged while the goods are still here.
  • How duty and VAT are assessed on used medical goods, which often differs from new.
