Karl Storz sits at the center of rigid endoscopy, and its equipment circulates on the US secondary market more heavily than any other rigid scope line. This page covers the Hopkins rod-lens telescopes, the camera and light systems built around them, and the modular laparoscopic instruments that share the same catalog logic.

What comes to market

Rigid telescopes lead. The Hopkins rod-lens design underpins Storz optics across nearly every specialty that uses a rigid scope: laparoscopes for general surgery, arthroscopes for orthopedics, cystoscopes and resectoscope optics for urology, hysteroscopes, ENT sinuscopes and otologic telescopes, rigid bronchoscopes, neuroendoscopes and a large veterinary line. Because the optics are built the same way throughout, the failure modes and the inspection method are identical whatever the specialty.

Cameras and light sources leave by the same routes — a generation change, a service line closing, a move from xenon to LED — and the pieces separate on the way out, so a head, a console, a light source and a fiber cable often reach one buyer from four origins.

Hand instruments are the third group and the source of most disappointment. Storz laparoscopic instruments are modular: a handle, a working insert, and an outer tube that carries the insulation. The design exists so the instrument can be taken apart and cleaned to its instructions for use, but it also means the secondary market is full of incomplete instruments — handles without inserts, tubes whose inserts went into another tray, jaws that never matched the tube they arrived with. A lot counted by the piece is rarely a lot of working instruments.

Identification runs on catalog numbers, not descriptions. Every telescope, insert, tube and handle carries an etched catalog number, and letter suffixes separate variants that look identical in a photograph. Ask for the number as etched, not as typed into a listing. Condition follows three grades: as-removed, decontaminated only; function-tested, meaning the seller has looked through the scope and worked the instrument through its motion; and refurbished, meaning optical or mechanical work was performed, by Storz or an independent shop. Ask which, and what was replaced.

What to check before buying used

  • Catalog number and etching. Read the full number off the item, suffix included, and photograph it. Faint, polished-out or re-marked etching is a reason to slow down — Hopkins-pattern optics are widely copied, and a copy has none of the original glass.
  • Image through the eyepiece. Aim the telescope at printed text. You want a crisp, flat, color-neutral field; overall softness, a yellow or brown cast, or a dark crescent at one edge indicates rod-lens damage, cement failure or a crushed shaft.
  • Internal fogging and autoclave marking. Condensation or a milky film behind the eyepiece window means the seal has failed and moisture is inside; that is not cleanable and worsens with every cycle. Storz marks which telescopes may be steam sterilized, and a non-autoclavable scope run through steam fogs exactly this way, so check the marking against the reprocessing the seller describes.
  • Fiber bundle and light post. Shine a light into the light post and look at the distal tip in a dark room. The illumination ring should be even; dark sectors are broken fibers, and a depleted scope looks dim on any camera. Check the post thread too — it will not take another maker's cable without the right adapter.
  • Distal tip and shaft. Inspect the objective window for chips and the shaft for dents. Roll the scope on a flat surface and watch the tip — wobble means a bend that binds in a trocar or cannula.
  • Camera head and console pairing. Storz heads are tied to the console generation they were built for. Confirm both belong to the same platform before buying either half separately, and check the head cable and strain relief for cracks.
  • Light source lamp. Ask the lamp type, the hour reading, and whether a spare module is included. Xenon output falls off gradually, so a lit bulb tells you little.
  • Instrument handles. Work the ratchet through every tooth, confirm the spring returns fully, and inspect the insulation at the handle-to-tube junction, where flexing wears it first.
  • Inserts and outer tubes. Confirm insert, tube and handle share the same length and diameter — mismatched pieces assemble, but the jaws will not close correctly. Check jaw serrations and any TC facing for wear, and run your eye along the tube's insulation, especially where a trocar seal rides.
  • Disassembly and flushing. Every modular instrument should come apart as its instructions describe and have a working luer flushing port. One that will not disassemble cannot be cleaned to specification.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Purchases here are made from US-based sellers, normally FOB or FCA at a US point the seller names — a warehouse, a port, an air cargo terminal — after which your own forwarder controls the shipment. Fix the named place in writing before funds move.

A shipment typically carries a commercial invoice, a packing list, an origin statement, and whatever documentation the seller holds. Two clarifications come up constantly: a manufacturer warranty on used equipment does not transfer, and a device sold into the US market carries no CE marking, since CE is a European conformity route and US clearance a separate one. US paperwork should never be offered to your authority as a conformity mark.

Three points to raise early. Telescopes fail in transit when they travel loose, so insist they ship in their original trays, containers or fitted cases and ask for photographs of the packing. Camera consoles and light sources are built for US mains supply — read the rear-panel input rating against your own supply and frequency. Catalog numbers on the invoice help your broker classify accurately, which matters far more on a mixed instrument lot than on a single scope.

Confirm with your own customs and health authority before you commit:

  • Whether used or reconditioned devices may enter your country, and whether prior authorization or an age limit applies to them.
  • Whether registration of the device or the importer is required before clearance.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies to this class of goods.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or a Certificate of Exportability is needed — both are requested on the US side, and neither can be produced after the goods land.
  • How duty and VAT are applied to used medical goods under your tariff schedule.
