Smith & Nephew reaches the secondary market mainly through its arthroscopy business, which most working professionals still know by the Dyonics name. What comes to market
Sports medicine equipment turns over on a short cycle relative to the rest of the operating room. Surgery centers move to a newer camera generation and release the outgoing imaging chain intact. A hospital consolidating sites onto one vendor's platform sheds whatever the losing sites ran. Orthopedic groups that change implant vendors release the trays tied to the departing system.
Identification starts with the mark. Arthroscopes, shaver blades, handpieces and much of the imaging chain carry Dyonics on the device itself, usually alongside the Smith & Nephew name, and that designation is what you should quote when requesting a manual, a parts list or reprocessing instructions. Older equipment often carries the Dyonics name more prominently than the corporate one; that does not make it a different manufacturer.
Four families circulate. Arthroscopes, in the diameters and viewing angles used for knee, shoulder, hip and small-joint work — including the well-known Dyonics 4 mm 30-degree arthroscope — normally with sheaths, obturators and inflow cannulas, though those parts get separated from the telescope in transit. Camera and light equipment: control units, camera heads, couplers, fiber-optic cables and light sources, moving as complete towers when a room is decommissioned. Powered resection: shaver and bur handpieces, their consoles, footswitches and cases. Instrument sets built around orthopedic implant systems — knee and hip trays under names such as GENESIS, LEGION and JOURNEY, and trauma nailing instruments under TRIGEN — usable only to a buyer running the matching construct.
Wound-care and soft-tissue debridement consoles sit just outside these categories and will be added as sellers bring them forward; their disposable handpieces and tubing sets should be sourced new.
Insist on one of three condition grades: as-removed, decontaminated and untested; reprocessed and function-tested, meaning each telescope was viewed through and each handpiece run under load; and refurbished, meaning documented work was performed and someone can say what was replaced.
What to check before buying used
- Scope optical inspection. In a dark room, put the telescope on a light source and look through the eyepiece at printed text at working distance. Scattered black points are broken image-bundle fibers. A yellow or brown cast indicates lens cement breakdown; a milky field suggests moisture inside the shaft.
- Illumination bundle. With the light post connected, point the distal tip at a wall and compare the ring of illumination to a known-good scope. A dim or patchy ring means light-fiber loss — the failure that creeps up quietly.
- Shaft straightness and distal window. Roll the shaft on a flat surface to reveal a bend, and inspect the tip window under magnification for chips and lifting cement. A bent shaft usually means internal lens displacement too.
- Autoclave leak test. Ask whether the scope has been leak tested since it was last processed and what the result was. A scope that has taken moisture will not recover on its own.
- Sheath and obturator fit. Assemble each telescope in its own sheath: the lock should seat positively, the seal should be pliable, and stopcocks should hold without weeping.
- Camera head and coupler. Inspect the coupler optic for internal fogging and scratching, exercise the focus mechanism, and flex the cable at the strain relief and connector pins. Confirm the head is a supported pairing with the control unit, and check for the immersion cap if the head needs one.
- Light source and fiber cables. Check reported lamp hours where the console tracks them, and hold each fiber cable end-on to a light: dark speckles are broken fibers and lost output.
- Shaver handpieces. Run each one and listen for bearing rumble. Confirm the blade hub engages, locks and releases, and that suction draws without a leak at the seal. Verify the handpiece generation is supported by the console you will pair it with.
- Instrument trays against a count sheet. Reconcile each tray against its inventory sheet and photographs of every level, and confirm the console recognizes every handpiece included. Missing intermediate sizes in a reamer, tap or broach sequence usually mean breakage.
- Cutting instruments and drivers. Inspect reamers, drills and taps for rounded or chipped edges and heat discoloration, and check driver tips for twist or rounding. Confirm cannulated shafts pass the brush the cleaning instructions call for.
- Sterilization parameters and containers. Get the current IFU for every item and check its cycle against what your sterile processing department runs, and inspect rigid containers for gasket condition, latch tension and filter retention plates.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Everything offered here sits with sellers in the United States. Smith & Nephew equipment normally moves on FOB or FCA terms at a named US point — the seller's dock, a consolidator, or a nominated port or airport — with your own forwarder carrying it onward. Fix the named place, the export packing standard and freight booking responsibility together.
A shipment typically carries a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever IFU or service records the seller kept. Assume two absences: no manufacturer warranty you can take over, and no EU CE marking on a device supplied to the US market.
Export points specific to this equipment: control units, light sources and shaver consoles are built for the North American supply, so read the rating plate and confirm mains voltage and frequency at the destination. Imaging consoles carry firmware revisions governing which camera heads they accept — record the revision from the unit. High-intensity lamp modules are consumable, so confirm a supply route in your region.
Confirm with your own customs and health authority before committing:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether a device-age ceiling or prior authorization applies.
- Whether national registration of the device class is required ahead of entry.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment must happen at origin.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is required — both originate on the US side and take time to obtain.
