GE's medical equipment sits mostly outside the six categories this exchange covers today. It does not make surgical hand instruments, rigid or flexible endoscopes, camera and light systems, powered bone instruments, or electrosurgical generators. What it does make — anesthesia delivery, patient monitoring, mobile imaging and diagnostic cardiology — is equipment a buyer assembling or re-equipping a procedural suite still has to source, so this page covers what genuinely circulates under the GE and Datex-Ohmeda marks and what to examine before taking one on. What comes to market
The paths are institutional. A hospital refits its operating rooms and displaces a fleet of anesthesia machines at once. A surgery center closes. A system standardizes its monitoring on one platform after a merger and the displaced racks, modules and central station hardware go out together. Because these are capital decisions rather than failures, what surfaces is frequently serviceable.
Anesthesia machines carry the Datex-Ohmeda lineage that GE absorbed, and the names a buyer will see are the Aestiva, Aespire, Avance, Aisys and Carestation families. They come through as complete workstations with ventilator, absorber and monitor, or stripped — often without vaporizers, which are held back and sold separately because they are agent-specific.
Patient monitoring circulates in greater numbers than anything else GE-branded: the Dash and Solar families from older installations, the Datex-Ohmeda S/5 line, and CARESCAPE B-series monitors, along with the parameter modules, racks, docking stations, cables and central station hardware that make them usable. Treat the monitor, its modules and its cable set as three separate purchases, because lots are frequently split.
Imaging-adjacent equipment that reaches a procedural room includes OEC mobile C-arms used in orthopedic, spine and pain work, portable ultrasound from the Logiq and Vivid families, portable radiography units, MAC electrocardiographs and Giraffe and Panda infant warming platforms. Condition sorts the usual three ways: as-removed means it powered on; function-tested means the seller exercised it against a patient simulator or test lung and logged the result; refurbished means calibration, battery replacement and repair were performed and documented.
What to check before buying used
- Enabled software options. GE monitors and anesthesia machines are sold with options tied to the individual unit — parameter and algorithm packages, gas analysis, networking. Ask for a photograph of the software and options screen and match it against what you need, since options do not travel between units.
- Module and rack completeness. Confirm which parameter modules are included, that they seat and are recognized, and that the module rack, docking station and mounting hardware come with the monitor. A monitor without modules measures nothing.
- Patient cables and sensors. Connector styles differ across generations and are proprietary. Verify that the ECG trunk cables, pressure transducer cables, temperature probes and oximetry cabling you already hold will mate, and confirm you can source the disposables in your country.
- Battery condition. Treat every battery as a consumable of unknown age. Ask for run-time under load rather than a charge indicator reading, and check for swelling or corrosion in the bay.
- Network and configuration state. Networked monitors are commissioned for a specific facility, with unit names, bed labels and central station addressing carried over from the last owner. Establish what reconfiguration takes, and whether it requires an authorized service tool.
- Anesthesia machine service history. Ask for the preventive maintenance record and the hour meter, then confirm the state of the consumable parts: oxygen sensor cell, flow sensors, absorber canister and seals, breathing circuit components, bellows or piston assembly, and the gas module water trap.
- Power-on checkout and leak test. Insist the seller runs the machine's own start-up checkout and leak and compliance test with a circuit fitted, and reports the outcome — the fastest honest read on an anesthesia workstation.
- Vaporizers. Establish whether they are included, which agents they are keyed for, whether they lock correctly onto that machine's manifold, and when they were last serviced. A vaporizer must be drained of agent before it ships.
- Medical gas connections. Hose assemblies and cylinder yokes on US-market machines are made to the US standard and may not fit your pipeline or cylinders. Confirm whether compliant hoses can be fitted in your country.
- Radiation-emitting equipment. A C-arm or portable radiography unit is a radiation-emitting device, not merely a medical device. Ask for the tube's history, the imaging chain's calibration record, and any dose and survey documentation — and expect your radiation protection authority to have a view on its entry and installation.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Sellers on this exchange are US-based, and equipment of this kind normally trades FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your forwarder handling carriage onward. Because anesthesia machines, monitors on carts and C-arms are bulky and delicate, settle crating responsibility when you settle the named place.
Expect a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever manuals, service records or configuration notes the seller holds. Neither a transferable manufacturer's warranty nor EU CE marking normally accompanies a US-market device into its second life, and a US clearance means nothing to your national regulator.
Four points bear on this equipment specifically: software option entitlements attach to the serial number and generally cannot be moved between units; lithium batteries are dangerous goods for air freight, so ask your forwarder early whether they travel with the device; medical gas fittings follow national standards; and a radiation-emitting unit is likely to need clearance from a radiation protection authority as well as your device regulator.
Confirm with your own customs administration and health authority:
- Whether used and refurbished devices may be imported at all, and whether an age limit or prior authorization applies.
- Whether registration is required for the device class, and whether it must be held by a local representative.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies at entry.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed — both are obtained on the US side and take time.
- How duty and VAT are applied to used medical equipment.
