How to buy a used ultrasound machine

Almost everything that matters about a used ultrasound purchase is attached to the end of a cable, not sitting in the cart.

There is one thing to understand about buying used ultrasound, and everything else follows from it: the transducers frequently cost more, together, than the system they plug into.

This single fact reorders the whole evaluation. A console in beautiful condition with one tired probe is a worse purchase than a scuffed console with three healthy ones. Two listings for the same model at different numbers are usually not the same transaction at all.

Start with the probe list

Get every included transducer named by model number, in writing. Not "three probes." Not "linear and curved." Model numbers.

Then match that list against the work you actually do. A system sold with probes you will not use is not a discount.

How to inspect a transducer

Probes fail in two places, and both are visible in a decent photograph if you ask for one.

The lens face. Cracks, delamination, bubbling or separation of the lens material. Any of these degrade the image and none are economically repairable. Ask for a straight-on, well-lit photograph of each lens face.

The cable and strain relief. Cables fail where they flex — at the probe end and at the connector. Ask for a photograph of the full cable run. Kinking, flattening and cracking near either end are all disqualifying on a probe you are paying real money for.

The connector pins. Check for bent or missing pins. Common on units shipped repeatedly, easy to miss, and quietly expensive.

If a TEE probe is included, it deserves separate scrutiny: bite damage, shaft integrity, and a history of electrical leakage testing. A compromised TEE probe is one of the largest single losses available in used medical equipment.

Then the console

Licensed packages. Measurement, quantification, strain, stress echo and application packages are licensed to the machine, not inherent to the model. Ask for the enabled options list against the serial number, in writing. This is the most common source of post-purchase disappointment across the entire ultrasound category.

Software revision. Determines which packages can be enabled at all.

Battery, on portables. A portable that cannot run on battery is a cart with a handle. Expect to replace the battery on any older portable and budget for it rather than discovering it.

Monitor and touch panel. Check the main display for dead regions and burn-in, and the touch panel across its full surface — touch panels wear at predictable spots where the same controls are pressed thousands of times.

Cooling and dust. Cart systems accumulate dust in fan paths. Thermal problems present as intermittent faults that are miserable to diagnose after delivery.

Two things people forget

Patient data. Older systems store studies locally. Confirm the seller has removed all patient data before shipment, and ask them to say so explicitly. It is their obligation, and it is worth having the answer in writing.

DICOM and export. If you need studies to reach a PACS, an EMR or a referring physician, confirm that capability is licensed and working. It is frequently an option rather than a default.

Ask for exported images

Across every point above, the same principle applies: exported sample images tell you what a photograph of the screen cannot. Ask for them. A seller who images equipment for a living can produce them in minutes, and a seller who cannot has told you something useful.

Freight

Portables ship easily. Cart systems are heavy, awkward, and need the same route measurement as any large equipment — every doorway, turn and lift between the truck and the room.
