Used Electrosurgical Generators and Accessories
An electrosurgical unit is one of the few devices on this exchange whose condition cannot be judged by looking at it. Output, isolation and return electrode monitoring are invisible until instrumented, which makes the biomed incoming inspection the whole decision. What comes to market
Generators leave US facilities in waves. A health system standardizes on one platform and displaced units come out of every room at once. Vessel sealing conversions retire earlier monopolar-only generators. A surgery center closes. Biomed retires a unit at end of supported life even though it still meets its output tolerances, and it enters the secondary market in working order with no manufacturer support behind it.
The lines that circulate are Valleylab generators — Medtronic's electrosurgical brand, and the platform most often seen in US operating rooms — along with Erbe generators and their argon and sealing accessories, ConMed monopolar and bipolar units, and the generators supplied with Olympus and Karl Storz endoscopic platforms. Footswitches, patient return cables, bipolar cords and cart mounts move loose and in quantity, and because most connectors are proprietary, the accessory question decides whether a generator is useful at all.
Condition grades mean something narrower here than elsewhere. As-removed means the unit was pulled from a room and powered off; assume nothing about output or isolation. Function-tested should mean it was run on an electrosurgical analyzer and its outputs recorded against the service manual — ask for the printout, not the phrase. Refurbished means boards, fans, filters, receptacles or displays were replaced and the unit re-verified. FDA distinguishes servicing from remanufacturing, and work that alters output characteristics or intended use falls on the remanufacturing side — which decides who stands behind the unit.
A generator withdrawn from manufacturer support may still be serviceable, but parts, software and calibration may only come through independent service. Establish who will maintain it before you buy, not after.
What to check before buying used
- Output verification with an analyzer. Run every mode the unit offers — cut, coagulation variants, bipolar, vessel sealing — into an electrosurgical analyzer across the load range and compare readings against the tolerances in that model's service manual. This is the only meaningful proof the generator works.
- Return electrode monitoring. Exercise the REM, NESSY or contact-quality circuit with the analyzer's split-pad simulation: the unit must alarm and inhibit output as contact quality degrades, then clear when it is restored. A monitoring circuit that will not alarm is a reject however clean the output looks.
- Isolation and leakage testing. Perform electrical safety testing to your own standard — protective earth resistance, enclosure and patient leakage — and confirm the output stage is isolated as the manual specifies. Test with the mains cord you will actually use.
- Receptacle and connector wear. Inspect every front-panel receptacle for scorching, pitting, arc tracking, cracked bezels and sockets that no longer grip a plug firmly. Worn receptacles cause intermittent output and often explain why a unit was retired.
- Footswitch and cable continuity. Flex each cable along its length and at both strain reliefs while watching for intermittent activation. Work each pedal repeatedly for a positive detent, correct mode selection and no stiction, and confirm the connector locks.
- Fan, filter and internal dust. Open the enclosure where permitted. Loaded filters, matted dust on boards and heatsinks, and a fan that rattles or runs slow all point to a thermal history that shortens component life. Look for liquid ingress and board corrosion.
- Error and fault logs. Where the service interface exposes an event or fault log, read it. Repeated self-test failures, output faults or thermal events say more about the unit than any visual inspection.
- Software version and enabled modes. Confirm the installed software version and which modes are enabled on that specific unit. Some platforms gate features in software, and enabling them later may not be possible.
- Accessory compatibility. Confirm the generator accepts the handpieces, bipolar forceps, sealing instruments and return electrodes you own. Most connectors are proprietary; an adapter is rarely the answer and may defeat monitoring.
- Return electrodes and patient plates. Confirm the pad type the unit's monitoring circuit expects — split versus solid — and that pads of that type can be obtained locally.
- Self-test and alarms at power-up. Watch the startup sequence: display segments, activation tone, alarm tones and any error codes. Confirm the activation tone carries across an operating room, since a silent one is a safety issue.
- Documentation. Ask for the service and user manuals, calibration records and the last biomed inspection report. Without the service manual, the tolerances to judge your analyzer readings against are unknown.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Sellers on this exchange are US-based and normally trade FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your own forwarder arranging carriage onward. Confirm the named place and freight booking, and ask that the generator ship in a rigid carton on a pallet, not loose in a crate with instruments.
Expect a commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin statement and whatever manuals and service records the seller holds. Two things rarely accompany a used generator: a manufacturer warranty transferable to a second owner, and CE marking — a device sold into the US market carries US clearance only, which has no standing under your own regulations.
Confirm with your customs authority and health regulator before purchase:
- Whether used or refurbished electrosurgical equipment may be imported into your market at all.
- Whether the device requires national registration or listing before it arrives.
- Whether a pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed; request it on the US side ahead of shipment.
- How duty and VAT are applied to used medical equipment in your tariff schedule.
Electrical supply is the first practical question. Check the unit's rated input and frequency against your mains, ask whether the model ships in a different configuration for your region, and expect to source a compliant cord set locally. Ask too whether interface language or region settings are software-locked. Then plan the incoming inspection before the unit ships: an analyzer, the service manual and a technician who can perform electrical safety testing are what make a used generator usable.
