The 1488 is the camera platform buyers reach for when they are moving a room forward rather than keeping an older one alive. Like any camera system of this type it is two inseparable halves — a head that clamps onto a rigid endoscope, and a camera control unit that turns what the head sees into a signal the room can use. This page is for buyers weighing an upgrade path and distributors specifying rooms abroad.

What comes to market

Supply follows renewal. Facilities that consolidate onto a single imaging platform, build out new ORs, or replace a tower after a failure release the outgoing equipment as a group, and a newer platform reaches the secondary channel when the department leapfrogs it. Specialty practices running one or two towers are the other reliable source. Complete carts with cabling intact appear more often here than with older platforms — a tendency, not a guarantee.

The listing vocabulary needs scepticism. "System" may describe a CCU alone, a head alone, the pair, or a dressed cart with coupler, light guide, monitor and light source. The head wears out and the CCU sits still, so single-half offerings are common in both directions. Get each model label photographed and the carton contents stated plainly.

Condition claims mean what the seller's process makes them mean. As-removed equipment has been unracked and nothing more. Function-tested should describe a real bench session — head on CCU, scope on head, image on a monitor, white balance completed — so ask for that image. Refurbished implies intervention: a re-terminated cable, a new window, fresh seals, work inside the CCU. Establish what was replaced, by whom, and whether the head was leak-tested at the end.

What to check before buying used

  • Pairing, verified from labels rather than the badge. Read the model designation on head and CCU and confirm they belong to the same generation. Stryker heads across neighboring platforms are similar enough to mate with hardware they were not built for, and a connector that seats proves nothing about support.
  • The camera cable under flex. Camera heads fail at the cable before anywhere else. Put a live image up, then move hand over hand along the cable applying a gentle bend, watching for sparkle, momentary black, a shifting cast or a picture that comes and goes. The zones that matter sit within a hand's width of the head and of the plug — where kinks, crush marks and split strain relief show.
  • The plug and its contacts. Inspect the pins for bend, recession, corrosion bloom or discoloration, and the shell for a cracked or missing seal. These give intermittent faults that a static bench test passes and an operating room does not.
  • Evidence of immersion. These heads spend their lives being soaked. Angle the head to a bright light and study the window for internal haze, condensation, a film that will not wipe off, or discoloration along the bonded seam. Work the buttons too: a spongy membrane is both a control fault and a leak path.
  • The reprocessing method the head is cleared for. Confirm from the head's current instructions for use which processes it permits, then ask what the department actually did. Damage from an unapproved cycle presents as the defects above, and is not reversible.
  • Coupler and what carries over from your existing room. Couplers, light guide cables and scopes may or may not transfer from an older Stryker platform; confirm each against the documentation for the head you are buying. On the coupler, check the clamp holds without slip, the focus ring runs its travel without grit, and the lens is clear — a mark there sits still on the monitor while the scope rotates.
  • White balance and color rendition. Balance the head against white gauze under the light source you will actually use. Repeated failures, or a residual tint once balanced, point at the imager or the cable rather than at technique.
  • Downstream fit, interconnects and records. Photograph the CCU's rear panel and confirm your monitor, capture device and image-management system take the connectors and formats present, and that any cable linking CCU to light source is in the sale. Ask for service history, re-cabling records, and a leakage current and protective earth test on the supply the unit will run on.

One caution on comparisons with the Stryker 1288 HD camera system. For a used purchase the deciding questions are practical rather than declarative: which head the CCU is matched to, which couplers and cables transfer, what the reprocessing instructions allow, and what your monitor accepts. Confirm each against the documentation for the units in front of you. The light source sits on the same tower and deserves attention on that visit.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Take the accessory question first, because it is what strands equipment after it lands. Couplers, light guide cables, seals and the disinfectant chemistry named in the head's instructions for use all need a supply route in your own market. A head you cannot reprocess as its manufacturer specifies is not usable, whatever condition it arrived in.

Then the electrical question. The CCU carries a rating plate giving input voltage and mains frequency, and a US-market unit is configured for the North American supply. Compare it against the supply at the installation site, ask whether the unit is switchable, and treat any change as a service matter rather than an adapter. The appliance inlet comes fitted with a US cordset, so obtain cordsets to your national plug pattern, hospital-grade where regulations call for it.

Commercially, sellers here are US-based and terms are usually FOB or FCA at a named US point, with onward carriage on your forwarder. Agree the named place, the protective packing for the head, and who books freight. Paperwork that generally travels is a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement and whatever IFU and service records exist; a used US-market device carries neither a transferable warranty nor EU CE marking.

Check with your customs administration and health regulator before you commit:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices are admissible, and whether an age limit or advance authorization applies.
  • Whether registration of the device is required before arrival.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies, and who may perform it.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed, requested on the US side before departure.
  • How duty and tax are assessed on used medical equipment where you are.
