Arthrex equipment on the secondary market clusters around sports medicine and arthroscopy: arthroscopes and the camera and light chain behind them, powered shaver and drill handpieces with their control units, and the hand instrument trays built around specific repair constructs. This page covers what circulates, the checks that separate a serviceable tray from an ornamental one, and what an importer needs settled first.

What comes to market

Ambulatory surgery centers open, merge and close faster than hospitals do, and an ASC that shuts releases everything at once — scopes, towers, shaver consoles and a wall of trays. A center converting to a different repair system retires the trays tied to the old one, while the arthroscopes and camera equipment, being system-agnostic, move on separately.

Four groups circulate. Arthroscopes in the working diameters and viewing angles used for knee, shoulder, hip and small-joint work, usually with sheaths, obturators and cannulas — though those parts separate from the telescope in transit far more often than sellers realize. Camera and imaging equipment under the Synergy imaging line: control units, couplers, camera heads and light sources, which travel as complete towers when a room is decommissioned. Powered equipment — shaver handpieces, burs, cordless drill and saw handpieces, battery pods, sterilization cases and the console that drives them. Instrument trays, the largest group by count and the most demanding to evaluate.

That last group is the one to understand properly. Arthrex trays are procedure- and implant-specific by design. A rotator cuff repair tray, a cruciate reconstruction tray and a hip labral tray are not interchangeable, and within each the drills, taps, guides and drivers are matched to a particular anchor or fixation family, along with the suture passers and retrievers — SutureLasso, Bird Beak and Scorpion-type instruments — that go with them. Completeness is the buying question. An almost-complete tray for a construct you do not run is a box of stainless.

Condition falls into three grades. As-removed is decontaminated and untested. Reprocessed and function-tested should mean each instrument was actuated, each scope looked through on a camera, and each handpiece run. Refurbished means work was performed — a scope rebuilt, an instrument re-tipped, a handpiece resealed — and you should ask who did it and what was replaced.

What to check before buying used

  • Tray completeness against a count sheet. Ask for the inventory sheet and a photograph of every level, then reconcile item by item. Gaps in sequential sizes — a missing intermediate reamer or tap — usually mean something broke and was never replaced.
  • Construct match, not brand match. Confirm the drills, guides and drivers correspond to the anchor or fixation family you actually implant. Same manufacturer is not the same system.
  • Cutting geometry on drills, reamers and taps. Inspect flutes and cutting edges under magnification for rounding, chipping and heat discoloration. Dull reamers run hot and are the most commonly worn item in the tray.
  • Drivers and cannulations. Check driver tips for rounding or twist, and confirm cannulated shafts are clear and brush through to the current cleaning instructions.
  • Scope image quality. Look through each telescope at printed text at working distance, in a darkened room, on a light source. Black dots are broken image-bundle fibers; a hazy or yellow field means moisture ingress or delaminated lens cement; a crescent shadow at the edge suggests the rod lens train has shifted.
  • Scope body integrity. Sight down the shaft for bend, inspect the distal tip window for chips, and check the eyepiece for cracked or lifting cement. Ask whether an autoclave leak test has been performed and what the result was.
  • Sheaths, obturators and cannula fit. Assemble each telescope into its own sheath and confirm the lock seats, the stopcocks turn and hold, and the seals are supple rather than hardened.
  • Camera head and coupler. Inspect the coupler optic for scratches and internal fogging, check the focus ring, and flex the cable at the strain relief and connector — failure at the head is common and not always a simple repair. Confirm the head and control unit are a supported pairing.
  • Shaver handpieces. Run each one, listen for bearing noise, confirm the blade hub locks and releases cleanly, and check suction path patency and seal condition. Verify the handpiece generation is supported by your console.
  • Cordless drills, saws and battery pods. Inspect the sterile housing seals, confirm the chuck or coupling retains attachments without wobble, and treat batteries as consumables — ask their age and whether they hold charge under load.
  • Sterilization and container condition. Confirm the current IFU parameters for each item, and inspect rigid containers for gasket resilience, latch tension and intact filter retention plates.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Arthrex equipment offered here sits with US-based sellers. Terms are normally FOB or FCA at a named US point — the seller's facility, a consolidator, or a nominated port or airport — and your forwarder takes it from there. Agree the named place, the packing standard and who books freight together.

Paperwork usually runs to a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whichever IFU or reprocessing records the seller retained. Do not expect a transferable manufacturer warranty, and do not expect EU CE marking: a device supplied to the US market carries US clearance, which has no legal effect where you are importing.

Three points specific to this equipment. Camera control units and shaver consoles built for North American supply need mains voltage and frequency confirmed against the rating plate first. Imaging consoles carry software revisions determining which camera heads they accept, so record the revision from the unit. Cordless handpieces ship with lithium cells, dangerous goods in air freight, which changes how a consignment is packed and declared.

Points to confirm with your own customs and health authority in advance:

  • Whether importation of used or refurbished devices is permitted, restricted by device age, or subject to prior approval.
  • Whether registration with the national health authority is required for this device class.
  • Whether a pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment must take place at origin.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or a Certificate of Exportability will be demanded — request these from the US side well ahead of departure.
  • The duty and VAT treatment applied to used medical goods in your tariff schedule.
