Used and Surplus Synthes Instrument Sets

Synthes equipment circulating in the United States falls into three groups: trauma fixation sets, craniomaxillofacial and spinal sets, and powered handpieces with their attachments and chargers. This page covers what comes out of US facilities, the two checks that decide whether a set is serviceable — completeness, and driver and drill-bit wear — and what an importer should settle first.

What comes to market

Fixation instrumentation moves when a hospital changes vendors, when a trauma or craniofacial service closes, and when sites consolidate onto one contract. Because these sets are institutional rather than surgeon property, they usually come out complete or nearly so, in their original cases, often with the count sheet still in the lid. Powered equipment turns over separately, as cell and charger support ends.

Both Synthes and DePuy Synthes marks appear on equipment in circulation, on cases, instruments and manuals alike. The line trades within DePuy Synthes today, and a set stamped only Synthes is neither a different manufacturer nor older-generation by definition. Quote whichever mark is on the case when you request documentation.

Trauma sets circulate under the plating and nailing system names: locking and dynamic compression plating modules, cannulated screw sets, and nailing systems with their insertion handles, targeting arms and extraction instruments. Craniomaxillofacial sets come as mandible, midface and cranial modules with fine drivers, bending instruments and plate cutters. Spinal sets come as pedicle screw and rod instrumentation with taps, awls, probes, rod benders and counter-torque handles. Powered equipment covers pen-style drives, compact air and battery drives, and their chucks, adapters, wire drivers, hoses, batteries and chargers.

The graphic case format is the practical advantage of this line. Modules ship in sterilization cases with printed silhouettes, labeled positions and racks holding each screw length and diameter in a fixed place. A photograph of an open case tells you more about completeness than any description — every empty silhouette is a missing item, named on the case itself.

Condition comes in three grades. As-removed is decontaminated and uninspected. Reprocessed and function-tested should mean the case was inventoried against its own graphics and the powered instruments run. Refurbished means specific work — seals, bearings, case racks — that the seller should be able to describe.

What to check before buying used

  • Photograph of every open case level. Ask for straight-down photographs of each tray and rack with the lid off. Against a graphic case that is close to a full inventory, since each vacant position is labeled with what belongs in it.
  • Screw racks by length and diameter. Work the racks position by position. Trauma and CMF sets fail in service because one length ran out mid-case; a rack with scattered gaps needs replenishment first.
  • Driver tips. The highest-yield wear check on this instrumentation. Inspect every hexagonal, star and cruciform tip under magnification for rounding of the flats, twist and burring at the corners. A rounded driver cams out on a locking screw and destroys the head, turning a routine step into a removal problem. Test each driver against a spare screw of the matching recess and feel for slop.
  • Drill bits. Check flutes and point geometry for dulling, chipping and heat discoloration, and roll each bit on a flat surface for run-out. Dull bits generate heat at the pilot hole. Confirm every bit length and diameter the set calls for is still present.
  • Depth gauges, taps and awls. Confirm each gauge hook is undamaged, its scale legible and its slide free — a worn gauge produces a wrong screw length, a clinical problem rather than an inconvenience. Check taps for rounded thread crests and awls and probes for blunted or bent tips.
  • Targeting arms, guides and jigs. Check for bend, play at joints and locking screws, and worn bushing holes. Assemble the arm onto its insertion handle and confirm the drill sleeve lines up with its hole.
  • Powered handpieces under load. Run each handpiece, listen for bearing noise, and confirm the chuck or coupling grips concentrically with no wobble. Verify each adapter belongs to the motor's own family. On air drives, inspect hose sheathing for cracking near the couplings and confirm the connector matches your supply — these run on regulated dry nitrogen, not shop air.
  • Batteries, chargers and transfer housings. Ask the age of the cells, whether they hold charge under load, and whether the sterile transfer housing seals. Confirm that battery and charger generation still has a supply route in your region.
  • Case condition and sterilization parameters. Check that racks are secure, silicone mats and brackets grip, latches hold under tension and filter retention plates are present — a case that will not seal cannot be processed regardless of what is inside. Get the current IFU for each module and powered item and compare its cycle against what your sterile processing department runs.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Equipment offered here sits with US-based sellers and normally moves FOB or FCA at a named US point — a seller's facility, a consolidator, or a nominated port or airport — with onward carriage by your own forwarder. Full instrument cases are dense and heavy, so settle export packing and palletizing when you settle the named place.

A shipment typically carries a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, whatever count sheets accompany the cases, and any IFU records retained. Plan on the absence of two things: a manufacturer's warranty you can take over, and EU CE marking. US clearance does not follow the goods into your regulatory system.

Two export specifics apply. Battery drives contain lithium cells, dangerous goods in air freight that change how a consignment is packed, labeled and declared — tell your forwarder at quotation stage, not at collection. Chargers built for the North American supply must be checked against mains voltage and frequency where they will run, reading the rating plate.

Before you commit, confirm with your own customs and health authority:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices are admissible, and whether importation is capped by device age or needs prior authorization.
  • Whether registration of the device class must precede entry.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment at origin is mandatory.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability will be demanded; both are requested on the US side, ahead of departure.
  • How your tariff schedule treats used medical goods for duty and VAT.
