Stryker 1288 HD Camera System
A 1288 camera system is two pieces that only work together: a camera head that clamps to the eyepiece of a rigid endoscope, and a camera control unit — the CCU — that turns the head's output into a picture. Buyers look for it by number because head and CCU are a generation-matched pair, and a listing naming one of them is offering half a system. This page is for the biomed rebuilding a laparoscopy or arthroscopy tower and the distributor assembling rooms abroad.
What comes to market
Rigid-endoscopy towers turn over as platforms. When a hospital re-equips its ORs, standardizes rooms onto one imaging platform, or converts to an integrated operating room, the camera, the light source and the cart leave together. Ambulatory centers closing or changing specialty mix are the other steady supply. Heads are handled, dropped and reprocessed daily while CCUs sit still in a rack, so the halves get separated along the way — which is why so many offerings are one piece.
Read the word "system" carefully. It may mean a CCU alone, a head alone, the two together, or all of that plus a coupler, a light cable, a monitor and the cart. A CCU without a head produces nothing, and a head without a CCU matched to it is inert.
Condition terms carry weight here. As-removed is a head pulled from a rack, untested since. Function-tested should mean the seller connected head to CCU, put an image on a monitor and completed a white balance — ask for a photo of that image taken through a scope, not of a bare head. Refurbished means real work: a re-terminated cable, a new window, renewed seals, board repair in the CCU. Ask what was done and whether the head was leak-tested after.
What to check before buying used
- Head and CCU as a matched pair. Confirm from the labels that the head belongs to the same generation as the CCU. Heads from adjacent Stryker platforms look alike and will connect to things they were never meant to drive.
- The camera cable, flexed along its whole length. The failure that dominates used camera heads. With a live image on a monitor, work slowly along the cable bending it in your hand, and watch for flicker, color shift, snow, or a picture that drops and returns. Concentrate on the last hand-span before the head and before the plug, looking for kinks, flat spots, a crushed shiny section where a cart wheel found it, and cracked strain relief. The cable is integral to this style of head, so a cable fault is a head repair — ask whether it has already been re-cabled.
- Connector pins. Look into the plug for pins bent, pushed back below their neighbors, discolored, or carrying a green or white bloom; a recessed pin gives exactly the intermittent behavior above. Check the body for trapped moisture and the seal for splits.
- Soak and immersion damage. Heads are immersed for high-level disinfection, and fluid ingress is the second great killer. Look through the optical window under a bright light for haze, film, droplets, or fogging that does not clear as the head warms, and inspect the bond line where window meets housing. Press each button through its travel: a membrane gone soft is a moisture path.
- Sterilization history against the head's own instructions for use. Heads of this era differ in what they tolerate, and some are soak-only; one that has been autoclaved shows precisely the failures above. Confirm what this head permits from its current IFU.
- The coupler. A separate item, very often missing. Check that the clamp jaws grip an eyepiece without slipping, the focus ring travels its full range smoothly, and the lens is clear. Haze there reads on the monitor as a fixed smudge that stays put when the scope is rotated — a quick way to tell coupler faults from scope faults.
- White balance and color. Balance against white gauze under the light source you intend to use. A head that will not converge, or leaves a cast afterward, is telling you about the imager or the cable.
- CCU rear panel, tower and paperwork. Photograph the back of the CCU and confirm your monitor, recorder and image-management system accept the connectors and formats present. If the CCU controls light source brightness, confirm the interconnect cable ships. Ask for service history, any re-cabling or window replacement records, and a leakage current and protective earth test on the supply the CCU will run on.

Buying considerations for international buyers
Camera equipment ships from US sellers, normally FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your forwarder taking it onward. Heads and couplers are small and light, so air freight is straightforward here — settle the named place, the packing standard for the head, and who books carriage.
Three points are specific to this equipment. The CCU is configured for the US supply: read the rated voltage and frequency from its plate, compare against the supply where it will be installed, and ask whether the unit is switchable. Its inlet takes a US cordset, so plan on cordsets in your own plug standard, hospital-grade where your rules require it. Most often overlooked, check accessory supply in your market first — couplers, light guide cables, seals and the sterilization chemistry the head's IFU names must be obtainable locally, since a head you cannot reprocess to its own instructions cannot be used.
A shipment normally carries a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever IFU and service paperwork the seller has. Neither a transferable warranty nor EU CE marking follows a used US-market device; US clearance has no legal effect where you are.
Verify with your own customs authority and health regulator before you commit:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether an age cap or prior authorization applies.
- Whether the device must be registered with your health authority before it lands.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment is demanded, and by whom.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed — obtained on the US side, ahead of shipment.
- How duty and tax fall on used medical equipment in your jurisdiction.
