Linvatec trades as ConMed, and both marks appear on equipment still in clinical circulation — often on units that are otherwise the same product. What comes to market

Start with identification, because this brand confuses buyers more than any other on this exchange. Equipment in circulation carries Linvatec, ConMed Linvatec or ConMed on the label depending on when it was made, and older powered instruments carry the Hall or Hall Surgical mark from the powered-surgery line Linvatec absorbed. A listing under one mark may be the identical item to a listing under another, so search all of them and identify equipment by model designation rather than by the name on the housing.

Arthroscopy is the largest stream. Arthroscopes, shaver and resection consoles with their handpieces, fluid management pumps, radiofrequency generators and the camera and light systems that accompany them leave when a sports medicine service or a surgery center refreshes its tower — and the pieces separate on the way out.

Surgical power is the second. The Hall lineage covers pneumatic and battery handpieces for large-bone work — sagittal saws, drills, reamers, wire drivers — plus the smaller high-speed handpieces used in ENT, spine and craniotomy work, with hoses, chucks, attachments and cases, or more often without some of them. Electrosurgical generators, hand controls, foot switches and argon-enhanced coagulation equipment cycle out when a system standardizes on one energy vendor; laparoscopic instruments, trocars and cannulae follow the modular handle-insert-tube pattern into the same partial lots.

Condition grades are the usual three. As-removed means decontaminated and pulled from service. Function-tested means the seller ran the console with a handpiece, put the generator under a test load, or looked through the scope. Refurbished means work was done — new bearings, a re-terminated cable, replaced cells. Ask what, and by whom.

What to check before buying used

  • Read the mark and the model. Record what the housing says — Linvatec, ConMed or Hall — and the model designation separately. The model determines compatibility; the mark only says roughly when the unit was labeled.
  • Console, handpiece and pedal as one system. Shaver and resection handpieces are keyed to the console generation they were built for, and the foot pedal is usually model-specific too. Confirm all three belong together before buying any separately — the pedal is the piece most often missing.
  • Shaver handpiece under load. Run it with a blade fitted. Listen for bearing rumble, feel for shaft runout, confirm the blade hub locks and releases, and check the suction path is clear and the connector pins undamaged.
  • Arthroscope optics. Look through the eyepiece at printed text: overall blur, a color cast or a dark crescent means rod-lens or fiber damage. Check the distal window for chips, roll the shaft to detect a bend, and confirm the autoclave marking matches the seller's reprocessing.
  • Camera head and console pairing. The head belongs to its console generation, so confirm both name the same platform, then flex the head cable while watching a live image.
  • Pneumatic hoses and fittings. Inspect the hose along its length for cracking and the fittings for wear at the seal. Confirm the coupler and regulator match the handpiece and that its lubrication and exhaust requirements are ones your department can meet.
  • Battery handpieces. Cells are consumables whatever the charge indicator shows. Ask their age, confirm the charger and sterile transfer housings came with the set, and run each handpiece under load rather than free-spinning it. Check the sterilization cases too, and confirm current instructions for use exist for every handpiece — reprocessing parameters differ across this line, sometimes within one family.
  • Chucks and attachments. Seat a blade, bur, drill bit and pin in every chuck the set contains and confirm each locks and releases. A worn sagittal saw blade clamp lets the blade move, which the surgeon feels as vibration.
  • Electrosurgical output. Do not judge a generator by feel or by its front panel. Have it tested against a resistive load with an electrosurgical analyzer and compare the readings to that model's service manual, across the modes you will use.
  • Return electrode monitoring and electrical safety. Confirm the contact-quality monitoring circuit alarms when the return electrode is disconnected or degraded, verify the other alarms named in the service manual, and check the front-panel receptacles for pitting or loose contacts. Any used generator should then pass a leakage and isolation test to the current standard before it goes near a patient.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Sellers on this exchange are located in the United States. Customary terms are FOB or FCA at a US point the seller names, with your forwarder taking the shipment from there. Agree that named place, and who crates the consoles, before funds move.

A shipment normally travels with a commercial invoice, a packing list, an origin statement, and whatever manuals or service records the seller holds. Ask for the service manual on any generator; you need it for acceptance testing. Do not expect a transferable warranty, and do not expect EU CE marking on equipment supplied to the US market — CE and US clearance are separate routes, and neither stands in for the other with your regulator.

Four points suit this brand's mix. Electrosurgical generators are configured for a nominal mains supply and are not universally switchable, so read the rating plate against your own supply and frequency and ask whether reconfiguration is possible. Pneumatic handpieces run on medical gas, and hose fittings differ between countries — a US nitrogen fitting may not mate with your wall or cylinder supply. Lithium-ion packs for cordless handpieces are restricted dangerous goods by air. And patient-contact accessories — return electrode pads, hand controls, blades — must be obtainable locally in the right configuration.

Confirm with your own customs and health authority before you commit:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether an age limit or prior approval applies.
  • Whether the device class must be registered nationally, and the importer as well.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies to electrical medical equipment.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is expected — both are requested on the US side, ahead of shipment.
  • How duty and VAT apply to used medical goods under your tariff schedule.
