Zimmer equipment reaching the US secondary market is overwhelmingly orthopedic and spinal: implant-system instrument trays, powered drills, saws and reamers, and the operating-room adjacents alongside them — tourniquet systems, pulse lavage and dermatomes. This page sets out what circulates, how to establish whether a tray is usable to you, and what an importer should settle first.

What comes to market

Orthopedic instrument sets move for one dominant reason: a hospital or surgery center converts to a different implant vendor, or standardizes several sites onto one contract. The implants go back or get consumed; the trays stay behind with no further use in that building. Surgeon retirements and joint-program closures do the same on a smaller scale. Powered equipment moves on a different clock — battery platforms are retired when cells and chargers stop being supported.

Identification is a matter of reading the marks. Equipment may be stamped Zimmer, Zimmer Biomet or Biomet, and powered instruments frequently carry the Hall name, long the powered-instrument mark in this family. All point into the same catalog, but the mark on the case is what to quote when you ask a seller for a manual.

The trays circulate under the implant system names — knee systems such as NexGen and Persona, hip systems such as Trilogy and Avenir, the Biomet-lineage Vanguard knee and Comprehensive shoulder, and the spinal fixation trays. These are only useful to a buyer already running, or committing to run, the matching implant system. The broaches, rasps, reamers, trials, guides and inserters are cut to that system's geometry and do not transfer to another manufacturer's implants. Read a listing for the system name before anything else.

The powered and adjacent equipment is the opposite case — largely system-agnostic and useful to a wider range of buyers: drills, oscillating and reciprocating saws, reamers and wire drivers with attachments and cases, pneumatic hoses and regulators, battery pods and chargers, A.T.S.-type tourniquet units with cuffs and hoses, pulse lavage handpieces, and air dermatomes with blade holders.

Condition comes in three grades. As-removed is decontaminated and nothing further. Reprocessed and function-tested should mean a drill was run under load and a tray inventoried, not that a box was opened. Refurbished means documented work — bearings, seals, sharpening, case repair — and you should ask what was done and by whom.

What to check before buying used

  • Tray completeness against the count sheet. The single most important check on this brand. Ask for the system's count sheet or inventory list, then work the tray level by level with photographs of each layer, counting by size and position rather than by eye. Any bracket, clip or silhouette holding nothing is a specific item you must source before the set can run a case.
  • Sequential sizes. In a graduated series — reamers, broaches, rasps, trial inserts — the gaps tell the story. A missing intermediate size means something broke or was pulled, and the tray cannot run a full case without it.
  • System and generation match. Implant systems get revised. Confirm the tray matches the implant generation you intend to use; instruments from an earlier revision may not mate with current trials or inserters.
  • Cutting geometry. Inspect reamer flutes, drill points, saw blade seats and rasp teeth under magnification for rounding and chipping. Blue or straw discoloration on a cutting edge means it has run hot.
  • Alignment guides and cutting blocks. Check for bent rods, worn pin holes and slots, and play at hinges and locking screws. A block with an elongated slot no longer constrains a blade.
  • Powered handpieces under load. Run each drill and saw, listen for bearing noise, and check the chuck, collet or coupling for concentric grip with no wobble at the attachment. Confirm attachments belong to the motor's own family, and ask when torque-limiting and ratcheting handles were last verified.
  • Batteries and chargers. Treat cells as consumables: ask their age, whether they hold charge under load, and whether the sterile transfer housing seals. Confirm the charger and battery generation still have a supply route.
  • Pneumatic path. Inspect hoses for cracking near the fittings, confirm the connector type matches your supply, and remember these drives run on regulated dry nitrogen rather than shop air.
  • Tourniquet units. These are calibrated instruments. Ask for the last verification record covering pressure accuracy, leak and alarm tests, and inspect port fittings and cuff hoses for splits and hardening.
  • Pulse lavage and dermatome. Check the handpiece for seal integrity and suction path patency, and confirm the dermatome's blade holder clamps flat and its depth adjustment moves through full travel without slop.
  • Sterilization and case condition. Obtain the current IFU for each item and check its parameters against your sterile processing department's cycles. Inspect rigid cases for cracked lids, worn latches, gaskets and intact filter retention plates.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Sellers here are in the United States, and Zimmer equipment normally changes hands FOB or FCA at a named US point — the seller's dock, a consolidator, or a nominated port or airport — with your forwarder handling the rest. Instrument cases are heavy and awkward, so agree export packing along with the named place.

Documentation that generally travels: a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, count sheets where the seller has them, and any IFU records retained. Do not plan around a transferable manufacturer's warranty or EU CE marking — a device supplied into the US market carries US clearance only, which has no standing in your jurisdiction.

Practical export notes: battery drives contain lithium cells, handled as dangerous goods in air freight, which affects packing, declaration and carrier choice. Pneumatic drives need a regulated dry nitrogen supply, not arranged in every operating room. Chargers built for the North American supply need mains voltage and frequency checked against the rating plate. Tourniquet units should be recalibrated locally after transport.

Confirm the following with your own customs and health authority before committing:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether an age limit or prior authorization applies.
  • Whether the device class must be registered nationally before clearance.
  • Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment is required at origin.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed — request it from the US side before departure.
  • The duty and VAT treatment your schedule applies to used medical goods.
