Used Zeiss VISALIS S500
A cataract surgery console where consumable supply and service coverage matter more than anything visible on the outside.
The Zeiss VISALIS S500 is a phacoemulsification console for cataract surgery, handling lens removal, irrigation, aspiration and associated anterior segment functions. It appears on the used market as ophthalmic surgical centers change platforms or consolidate theatres.
As with every phaco console, the buying decision is dominated by two questions that have nothing to do with how the machine looks.
Consumables and service, in that order
Consumables. Establish that single-use packs and tubing for this platform are still available to you, at what cost per case, and from which supplier. Confirm this with a supplier who will sell to you rather than with the seller of the console. A platform without consumable supply cannot operate.
Service coverage. Zeiss surgical platforms have a smaller installed base than the largest ophthalmic manufacturers, and third-party service coverage is correspondingly thinner in some regions. Confirm who will support the console where it is going, before purchase, not after it arrives.

Known failure points
Consumable supply. The first question and the one that decides everything else.
Service coverage. The second question, and a real constraint given the platform's installed base.
Handpiece service life. Precision components with a finite life. Ask when each was last serviced.
Fluidics wear. Ask for the service history of the pump and fluidics path.
Footswitch condition. Confirm pairing and function; batteries age.
