Arthroscopes from this line come loose when the console around them changes: a practice replaces its imaging chain, a hospital retires a shaver and fluid-management platform and the matched optics follow, or a group settles on one vendor and clears out the rest. The telescopes are rarely the reason for the change, which is why serviceable optics appear in these lots.
Identification comes first, because the Dyonics name has broad reach. It is applied across Smith & Nephew's arthroscopy portfolio — shaver systems, blades and burs, fluid management, video and telescopes — so "Dyonics" in a listing names the line, not the item. On a telescope you may see the Dyonics name, the Smith & Nephew name or both, plus an etched catalog reference. Check those marks against the manufacturer's current catalog rather than a listing title, and where the etched angle and diameter are no longer legible, treat both as unconfirmed until you have looked through the scope.
Condition grading matches the rest of rigid optics. As-removed means decontaminated and untested. Function-tested means someone looked through it, checked illumination, confirmed it held pressure and can say so in writing. Repaired means a factory or independent house has been inside it — relensing, a new fiber bundle, a new window, a replacement shaft. Independent arthroscope repair is legitimate and widespread, but the parts fitted are not always the original manufacturer's — ask who did the work and whether original components were used.
What to check before buying used
- Coupler fit, tested with your own coupler. This is the practical buying question. Clamp the coupler you use onto the eyepiece and confirm it centers the image, holds focus without creeping and does not shade a corner. Eyepiece funnels differ enough between makers that a coupler which grips one telescope perfectly sits off-axis on another.
- The whole camera and light chain. Confirm every junction: telescope to coupler, coupler to camera head, head to control unit, light cable to post. A telescope that suits your camera but needs an adapter you do not own is not ready to use.
- Light post thread standard. Check which cable standard the fitted adapter presents and whether it unscrews cleanly. Cross-threaded posts, missing adapters and burn pitting at the fiber face are common and all affect illumination.
- Look through it, then rotate it. Aim at printed text, judge sharpness from center to edge, then turn the scope through a full revolution watching for the image tilting, softening or dimming anywhere in the sweep. That sweep is the purpose of an angled design, and where a shifted optical stack reveals itself.
- Signs of ultrasonic cleaning. Rigid telescopes are generally excluded from ultrasonic cleaners, and the damage is distinctive: a diffuse haze that will not clear, adhesive lifting at the window, a dull etched sheen on the shaft. Ask how the scope was reprocessed.
- Handling damage from the tray, not the joint. Slender optics are broken between cases as often as during them. Look for crush marks or flats from lying in a tray with no bracket, a dented eyecup rim, and a bend detectable by rolling the scope on a flat surface. Any bow is a cracked rod-lens column.
- Distal end, window and fibers. Under magnification, check for chips at the window rim and impact scars where a blade or bur has touched the end of the scope; a pitted or cracked window admits fluid and the image clouds soon after. Then point the post at a bright source and read the illumination pattern at the tip: scattered dead fibers are ordinary, a dark sector means a crushed bundle.
- Sheath compatibility. Do not assume a telescope of a given diameter seats in another manufacturer's sheath. Locking features and shaft length differ, and a scope that sits proud of the sheath tip will leak and give a distorted field. Test the pairing physically, or take telescope and sheath together.
- Sterilization method, test evidence and accessory supply. Pull the current IFU and confirm your sterile processing department runs a method it permits; the seller's facility may have run a different cycle. Ask for the pressure test result in writing, expect an untested scope to be listed as untested, and confirm the sheaths, obturators and brushes it needs are still supported.
Buying considerations for international buyers
US sellers list on this exchange, and telescopes generally move on FOB or FCA terms at a named US location — usually the seller's premises or a nearby airport — with the buyer's forwarder arranging everything downstream. Fix the named place, the booking party and where risk passes before agreeing terms; an item this delicate is most exposed while it moves.
A shipment normally carries a commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin statement and whatever IFU or repair documentation the seller holds. What will not come with it: a transferable manufacturer warranty, and EU CE marking. A device supplied to the US market is not CE marked, and US clearance has no legal effect in your jurisdiction.
One consideration is specific to this line. An arthroscope from a powered-arthroscopy portfolio is normally taken alongside the shaver console, blades and fluid-management sets that make it useful, and those consumables are model-specific and continuously reordered. Check what supply route exists in your country for them before committing to a platform, and remember that consoles — unlike the telescope — bring mains supply and plug questions. Ask for a hard case or scope tube for carriage.

- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether any age restriction applies.
- Whether registration or notification to the health authority is required before arrival.
