Karl Storz Xenon 300 Light Source
A xenon light source is the illumination half of an endoscopic tower: an arc lamp behind a reflector, an iris metering how much light escapes, and an output port coupling into a fiber-optic light guide cable that runs to the scope. The camera decides what the picture looks like; the light source decides whether there is a picture. This page covers what to establish about a used Xenon 300 before it ships — and about the cable that travels with it.
What comes to market
Light sources leave service on the tower's schedule rather than their own. When an operating room re-equips, camera, light source and cart move out as a set, and the light source is often the healthiest thing in the group — no imaging chain to age, no cable to be crushed. Departments converting to solid-state illumination release xenon units in quantity, and closing surgery centers supply the rest. Because a light source outlives several camera generations, it also appears on its own.
What arrives varies: a bare unit, a unit with light guide cables — the difference between a working setup and a box — or a dressed cart with camera and monitor. Establish which is on offer, and get the output port photographed.
Condition terms need translating for lamp-based equipment. As-removed means the unit was unracked with no lamp check and no reading taken. Function-tested should mean the lamp was struck, the unit ran, the iris was swept and output confirmed through a cable. Refurbished usually means a new lamp module, a fan and filter service, or igniter work. Ask which, and ask separately for the lamp-hour reading today.
What to check before buying used
- Whether replacement lamps are still supplied. Treat this as the first question, not the last. A xenon lamp is a consumable with a manufacturer-stated service life, so a unit whose lamp module can no longer be obtained has an expiry date attached. Confirm the lamp for this model can still be had through a channel open to you.
- The lamp-hour reading, and its credibility. Where the unit displays elapsed lamp hours, have the figure photographed on screen rather than reported, then ask whether the counter was reset at the last lamp change — an unreset counter, or a fresh module behind a high reading, tells you the opposite of what it seems to.
- Ignition, running behavior and the lamp housing. Watch the unit strike from cold: repeated attempts before it lights, a lamp that lights and drops out, or a flicker settling in after some minutes points at the lamp, the igniter or the power section. Then open the lamp door and look for scorch marks, deposits or clouding on the reflector, cracked ceramic and discolored contacts. Debris or a fractured reflector face means a lamp failed hard in service.
- Cooling: fan, filter and exhaust. Xenon units run hot and protect themselves by shutting down when they cannot. Confirm the intake filter is present and not felted with dust, listen to the fan for bearing rumble, and check for airflow at the exhaust. Heat-marked vents suggest it was run against a wall or in a closed cabinet.
- Iris, brightness control and the link to the camera. Sweep the brightness control end to end and confirm output tracks smoothly. If the light source is meant to follow the camera's automatic exposure, confirm the interconnect cable to the camera control unit is included and that both ends match.
- The output port and its fitting. Karl Storz light sources use the manufacturer's own light guide fitting, and screw-in adapters exist for cables built to other systems. Establish which fitting is on the unit, whether an adapter is included, and what your scopes' light posts take — the commonest reason a light source arrives and connects to nothing.
- Fiber loss and condition in the light guide cable. A cable is not a passive accessory; broken fibers accumulate with every kink and drop. Hold one end toward a window and look into the other: intact fibers glow evenly, broken ones show as black points. A few are normal; a peppered face means lost illumination you will try to make up at the lamp. Inspect the end faces for scorching, crazed adhesive and glass below its collar, check the jacket for kinks and stiffness, and confirm from its instructions for use which reprocessing it permits.
- Inlet, mounting and paperwork. Check the mains inlet and fuse carrier are undamaged and any rack ears present, and ask for service records, the instructions for use, and a leakage current and protective earth test on the supply it will run on.

Buying considerations for international buyers
Lamp supply governs everything else here. Before a unit leaves the United States, establish that its lamp module can be sourced where the unit will be used, and settle whether a spare travels with it. Light guide cables deserve the same treatment: a poor cable undermines an otherwise sound light source.
Power comes next. A US-market unit is built around the North American supply, and a xenon lamp's power section is not something to improvise around. Read the input voltage and mains frequency from the rating plate, compare them with the supply at the installation site, and ask whether the unit is switchable. Expect a cordset in your national plug pattern, hospital-grade where regulations demand it.
On terms and paperwork: sellers here are US-based and normally sell FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your forwarder collecting. A shipment usually carries a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever instructions for use and service records the seller holds. A used device carries no transferable warranty, and a US-market unit no CE marking.
Establish with your customs authority and health regulator ahead of purchase:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether an age restriction or advance permit applies.
- Whether the device must be registered before it arrives.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment is required, and who is authorized to carry it out.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed — obtained on the US side ahead of departure.
- How duty and tax apply to used medical equipment where you are.
