Karl Storz Hopkins II 10 mm 0° Laparoscope
The 10 mm 0° Hopkins II telescope is the workhorse of rigid endoscopy in general surgery — the scope that sat in nearly every laparoscopic tray in American hospitals and surgery centers for a generation. What comes to market
These telescopes leave service as a group. A hospital converting its ORs to a new camera platform retires the optics matched to the old one; a surgery center closes; a system standardizes on one vendor. Because the trigger is a platform decision rather than a broken scope, the optics that come out are frequently serviceable, and 0° units accumulate fastest because rooms stocked the most of them.
Hopkins II is Karl Storz's rod-lens family, and the construction explains both its reputation and its failure modes. The long air spaces of a conventional lens train are replaced by glass rods with thin air lenses between them, so a slim shaft transmits a bright, wide, flat image. The optics are therefore a rigid column of cemented glass inside a metal tube — tolerant of daily use, intolerant of a drop, a crush or a bent shaft.
The 0° is the default first scope because the line of sight runs straight down the shaft axis: the image does not rotate as the scope turns, so nobody manages orientation. It is the access and general dissection scope, acquired before anything angled.
Both autoclavable and non-autoclavable telescopes remain in circulation, the most consequential mismatch in used rigid optics: older telescopes were never rated for steam, steam-sterilizable versions carry a manufacturer marking, and the wrong cycle destroys the seals permanently. Condition otherwise falls into three grades. As-removed is decontaminated but untested. Function-tested means light transmission, image and pressure integrity were checked and documented. Repaired means a factory or independent house relensed the scope, replaced the fiber bundle or fitted a new window or shaft — routine work here, so ask who performed it and whether it stayed on the servicing side of FDA's servicing-versus-remanufacturing line.
What to check before buying used
- Look through it before anything else. Aim the eyepiece at printed text under room light and judge the image edge to edge. It should be crisp, flat and color-neutral; a yellow or brown cast means heat-degraded optical cement, softened contrast means internal haze.
- Internal moisture and distal window. Failed seals admit moisture to the optical chamber — a haze that never clears, or a droplet that migrates when the scope is tilted. Inspect the end window under magnification for chips, crazing and lifted adhesive at its rim, which is how moisture gets in. Neither is field-repairable; both are a factory reseal.
- Illumination fiber loss. Aim the light post at a bright source and inspect the illumination ring at the tip. Scattered black specks are normal with age; contiguous dark patches mean a crushed bundle and a dim image in a large cavity.
- Shaft straightness. Roll the scope on a flat surface and watch the tip for wobble. A bend barely visible to the eye is enough to fracture rod-lens elements, and a bent shaft is an optical failure even when the image still passes.
- Hopkins II marking and catalog etching. Manufacturer name, catalog etching and any steam-sterilizable marking should be legible on the shaft or eyepiece. Ground-off, overstamped or re-etched markings are a reason to ask what was done to the scope, and by whom.
- Light post thread and adapter. Karl Storz posts take a screw-on adapter, and scopes circulate with the wrong one fitted or none at all. Confirm which cable standard it presents, that the thread is not stripped, and that the post is not pitted from burn-back.
- Eyepiece and coupler seat. Check the eyecup for cracks and the funnel for dents or ovality. A coupler that cannot clamp concentrically shades a corner of the image and will not hold focus.
- Autoclavability against your own process. Read the current IFU for the telescope and confirm your sterile processing department runs a method it permits. Do not assume the seller's facility ran the cycle you run.
- Pressure test and service history. Ask whether the scope has been pressure-tested, and for the result in writing with any repair reports. A documented rebuild is easier to plan around than an unknown history.
- Sheaths, trocars and light cables sold with it. Seat the telescope in the sheath yourself, confirm the seals are intact, and check any light cable for broken fibers against a wall.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Sellers here are US-based, and rigid optics normally move on FOB or FCA terms at a named US point — a dock, an airport or a port — with the buyer's forwarder taking over. Agree the named place and who books carriage first.
A shipment typically travels with a commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin statement, and whatever IFU or repair records the seller holds. Two things generally do not: a transferable manufacturer warranty, and EU CE marking. Devices cleared for the US market are not CE marked, and US clearance has no standing where you are.
Packing deserves attention. A rod-lens telescope is a glass column damaged by point loading rather than rough handling in general, so ask for a hard case or scope tube with the shaft supported at both ends. The telescope is a passive optic, so mains voltage and frequency are not a question for it — they become one the moment a light source or camera is acquired alongside.
Confirm the following with your own customs and health authority before you commit:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported at all, and whether device age limits apply.
- Whether the device must be registered or notified to your health authority before entry.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment is required, and who may perform it.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability will be demanded — requested from the US side, before departure.
- How duty and VAT apply to used medical goods, which frequently follows a different rule from new.
