Used Philips Medical Equipment
Philips builds monitoring, resuscitation, ultrasound and imaging equipment. None of that falls inside the six categories this exchange lists today, and this page does not pretend otherwise. It exists because the buyer fitting out an operating room, an endoscopy suite or a cath lab still needs monitors at the head of the table, a defibrillator on the crash cart and ultrasound for access and guidance. Monitoring, defibrillation and imaging categories will open as sellers in those lines come on.
What comes to market
Monitoring is the bulk of it. IntelliVue bedside monitors of several generations circulate, together with the transport monitors that dock to them, the measurement modules and extensions that carry the parameters, mounting hardware, and the central station and telemetry equipment behind them. SureSigns and Efficia units appear from lower-acuity areas. These come out when a hospital re-standardizes after a merger, when a unit is refitted, or when a facility closes — displaced in fleets, rarely one at a time.
Resuscitation equipment circulates steadily: HeartStart defibrillator-monitors of the MRx and XL families from crash carts and transport, and the smaller automated units from clinic and public-access settings. Ultrasound comes through as portable and cart-based systems from the CX, Sparq, Affiniti, EPIQ and HD families, usually with a subset of the transducers they were bought with. Interventional imaging suites also change hands, but those are installation projects rather than shipments.
Condition sorts three ways. As-removed means the unit powered on and nothing further was established. Function-tested should mean the seller exercised it against a patient simulator — and, for a defibrillator, a defibrillator analyzer — and kept the record. Refurbished means documented work: battery replacement, board or display repair, recalibration, and a completed electrical safety test. Ask which you are being offered and what evidence sits behind it.
What to check before buying used
- Software revision and licensed options. Philips monitors carry their capability as licensed options against a serial number: measurement and algorithm packages, protocol and networking features. Ask for photographs of the revision and options screens and check them against the parameters you actually need, since options do not migrate between units.
- Module compatibility. A measurement module or extension supported on one monitor generation may not be recognized by another, or may need a particular host software revision. Confirm the exact modules are seated in the exact monitor and recognized, rather than assuming a family name guarantees it.
- What is physically included. Monitors are routinely split from their modules, racks, mounts and cable sets. Itemize the ECG trunk cables, invasive pressure cables, temperature probes, oximetry cabling, cuffs and hoses, and confirm the connector styles match what you already run.
- Battery health, not charge. Ask for the battery's reported cycle count and health status from the monitor's own battery screen, plus a run-time observation off mains. Inspect the bay for corrosion and the pack for swelling, and assume any battery of unknown age is a replacement item.
- Network and clinical configuration. A networked monitor arrives configured for someone else's facility — bed labels, unit names, server addressing, alarm profiles. Establish what re-commissioning involves and whether it needs an authorized service tool. If telemetry is part of the purchase, verify that its radio is one your national spectrum regulator permits, because wireless allocations are country-specific.
- Stored patient data. Used monitors and defibrillators frequently retain event records, trends and case data from their last owner. Require the seller to clear stored patient information before shipment and to say so in writing.
- Defibrillator performance. Energy delivery must be verified on a defibrillator analyzer across the settings the service manual specifies, along with pacing output, ECG and any oximetry or capnography function. Check the therapy cable and paddle or pads connector for cracking, read out the device's self-test history, and secure a disposable pads supply route before you commission it.
- Ultrasound transducers. Probes fail more often than the systems they plug into. Run each transducer through the system's own transducer test or against a phantom, looking for element dropout, then inspect the lens for delamination and the cable and strain relief for kinking. Confirm exactly which probes are included, because a system without the probe you need is not usable for your procedure.
- Display, controls and alarms. Exercise touchscreens across the full surface, work every hard key and encoder, and verify audible and visual alarms annunciate at the priorities the manual describes.
- Service history and error logs. Ask for preventive maintenance records, the device's error log, and confirmation that the seller can supply service documentation matching the installed revision.
- Electrical safety and mains configuration. Earth continuity, enclosure and patient leakage to your biomed department's standard, and confirmation of the mains supply and frequency the unit is built for.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Equipment here is held by US-based sellers, and sales are normally struck FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your forwarder taking it from there. Because monitors, carts and ultrasound systems travel badly when badly packed, agree who crates the shipment, and to what standard, when you agree the named place.
The travelling documents are typically a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever manuals, configuration notes or service records exist. Do not plan around a warranty transferring to you, and do not expect an EU CE mark on a device supplied to the US market — the absence is ordinary, and US clearance carries no weight with your own regulator.
Three matters are particular to this equipment. Option licensing is bound to the individual device and is generally neither transferable nor re-issuable to a second owner, so confirm with a Philips-authorized service organization in your country what can be enabled before you commit. Lithium batteries in monitors and defibrillators are dangerous goods for air transport — ask your forwarder early how they must travel. And any wireless telemetry or network radio must be approved for use on your national spectrum.
Confirm with your own customs administration and health authority:
- Whether used and refurbished medical devices may enter at all, and whether an age cap or import authorization applies.
- Whether device registration is required, and whether a local representative must hold it.
- Whether a conformity assessment or pre-shipment inspection is imposed at the border.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed — both are requested on the US side well ahead of shipment.
- How duty and VAT are assessed on used medical equipment.
