Steris equipment sits behind almost every used instrument and endoscope that changes hands in the United States: it is what cleaned, disinfected and sterilized them before they came to market. What comes to market

The scope, plainly. Of the six categories this site covers so far — surgical instruments, rigid scopes, flexible endoscopes, camera and light systems, surgical power and electrosurgical — Steris meets them through instrument-handling accessories and through the condition it leaves on everything it processes. The capital lines it is better known for — Amsco steam sterilizers, V-PRO hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, Reliance washer-disinfectors and cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, endoscope reprocessors and drying cabinets, surgical tables and lighting — sit outside those six categories today, and will get pages as the categories expand.

What circulates within scope is the hardware around the instrument: rigid containers with their lids, gaskets, latches, filter retention plates and valves; perforated and mesh trays; stringers, racks and brackets; silicone finger mats and tip protectors; and the fitted cases rigid scopes, power tool systems and laparoscopic instruments travel in. These reach the market when a sterile processing department is rebuilt, when a hospital standardizes on one container system across sites, or when a set sells and its containers go with it.

The larger point is what a facility's reprocessing regime does to the instruments it handles, because that regime is invisible in a photograph and decides what you receive. Water chemistry drives most of it: high mineral content or a poor final rinse leaves scale and the brown, blue and iridescent films seen on used lots, while chloride exposure — saline on a tray, chlorinated detergent — produces pitting that never comes out. Detergent choice matters too: strongly alkaline chemistry attacks anodized aluminum, which is why used containers so often arrive faded and blotchy. Departments that ran enzymatic pre-cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning and lubrication as routine send out free box locks and clean serrations; those that did not send out stiff joints and residue in lumens.

Condition language is simpler here. Accessories are usually offered as-removed; occasionally a seller has stripped, cleaned and function-tested a container set, the reprocessed grade. Refurbished on a container should mean new gaskets, new filter retention hardware and a checked latch, and the seller should say which parts changed.

What to check before buying used

  • Ask what the water was like. One question — softened, deionized or reverse-osmosis final rinse — predicts most of what you will see on a lot. Facilities that could not treat their water send out stained instruments and scaled containers, every time.
  • Ask what chemistry ran. Neutral and enzymatic detergents are kind to aluminum containers and anodizing; strongly alkaline chemistry is not. Faded or chalky anodizing tells you what was used, whether or not anyone says so.
  • Look for evidence of lubrication. Open and close hinged instruments from the lot. Smooth box locks indicate a department that lubricated after cleaning; gritty joints indicate one that did not, and those pieces will need work.
  • Inspect for dried bioburden, not shine. Use lighted magnification at box locks, serrations and lumen openings. On cannulated instruments and suction tips, a protein-detection swab through the lumen catches what the eye cannot.
  • Container gaskets. Compress the lid gasket along its length and look for permanent set, splits or hardening. Gaskets are consumables to replace before the container returns to service, so confirm the right part is obtainable for that model.
  • Filter retention plates and valves. Confirm the plates are present, flat and undamaged, and that any valve assembly moves freely. A container missing this hardware is not a sterilization container.
  • Lid and base geometry. Sight along the lid for warp, check hinge and latch tension, and seat the lid on the base to confirm it beds evenly all round. Dropped containers deform at the corners.
  • The container's own instructions for use. A rigid container is validated for specific cycles. Obtain the current IFU for that model and confirm those cycles match what your sterile processing department runs — a document check, not a judgment call.
  • Fitted scope and power cases. Confirm the foam or bracket cradles are intact and specific to the instruments you are buying. A scope shipped in a generic case arrives damaged.
  • Nameplates and capital equipment. Whatever you buy should carry a legible model and serial plate; without one you cannot obtain the right IFU or service manual. A sterilizer, washer-disinfector or reprocessor is then a project, not a purchase: installation and operational qualification on site, a service manual, and utilities — steam quality, water treatment, drainage, electrical supply — confirmed by your own engineer before commissioning.
  • Consumables do not travel. Sterilant cartridges, concentrates, detergents, filters and indicators carry shelf lives and shipping restrictions of their own. Source them locally.

Buying considerations for international buyers

Goods move from US-based sellers, ordinarily on FOB or FCA terms at a named US point, with the buyer's forwarder taking over there. Container systems are bulky rather than heavy, so ask early how the consignment will be palletized and whether it rates on dimensional weight — that shapes the freight decision more than the incoterm.

Documentation usually runs to a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement and whatever instructions for use or service records the seller holds. For containers the IFU is the document that matters; for equipment, ask for the service manual and maintenance history by serial number. Do not expect a transferable warranty or CE marking — US-market devices carry neither, and US regulatory status has no effect in your jurisdiction.

Confirm with your customs broker, your health authority and, for equipment, your biomedical engineering team:

  • Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether sterilization equipment is treated differently from accessories.
  • Whether registration or an import license is needed before arrival, and whether pre-shipment inspection or conformity assessment applies.
  • Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is required — requested from the US side, before shipment.
  • For powered equipment, whether the mains supply, frequency, steam quality and water treatment at your site match what the unit needs, and whether a service provider in your country supports the model.
  • What duty and VAT your own schedule places on used medical goods.
