Olympus CV-180 Video Processor
The CV-180 is a video processor: the unit that takes the signal from the imaging sensor at the tip of a videoscope, builds a picture from it, and sends that picture to the monitor and the recording chain. Buyers search for it by name because it sits at the centre of a flexible endoscopy tower — nothing else in the rack makes an image. This page is for the biomed rebuilding a GI or bronchoscopy tower and the distributor assembling towers abroad.
What comes to market
Endoscopy is bought and retired as a system rather than as parts. A videoscope and its processor are engineered as a matched generation, so a department moving up changes the processor, the light source and much of its scope fleet at once. Processors of this generation therefore surface in clusters, often beside working scopes carrying the same series designation in their own model names. The other recurring triggers are a gastroenterology practice folding into a hospital system, two suites consolidating onto one rack standard, and mobile providers retiring carts.
They arrive in three shapes: a processor alone, which is a component rather than a working system; a processor with its matched light source; or a complete tower on its cart with monitor, keyboard, footswitch, cabling and water bottle. What goes missing in between is predictable — keyboard, interconnect cable, bottle and cap, video leads, cordset. Ask for an itemized, photographed list of the carton rather than accepting the word "system".
Condition grades carry specific meanings here. As-removed means the unit was unplugged from a live rack and boxed, and nobody has energized it since. Function-tested should mean the seller powered it, connected a scope and confirmed a live image — ask which scope model, because a processor that images one scope may refuse another. Refurbished means work was done: a rebuilt receptacle, replaced boards, a software update.
What to check before buying used
- Which scopes the unit will actually drive. The dominant question, and the one that decides the purchase. Olympus builds scopes and processors in matched generations, and the generation appears in the model designations on both sides; a processor supports what it was designed around plus a restricted set from neighboring generations, sometimes only with an adapter or at a particular software level. Do not reason from the family name — photograph the software version screen, then check each scope you own against the manufacturer's compatibility documentation for this unit, by full model designation.
- Power-up behavior. Have the seller energize the unit with a scope connected and photograph the startup sequence and any codes shown during self-test. A unit that posts a code then clears it is a different proposition from one that halts.
- The scope connector receptacle. The highest-wear point on any processor. Look into the electrical socket for pins that are bent, pushed back, discolored or green with corrosion, and check the shroud for cracks. The fault it produces is intermittent — dropout only when the connector is nudged.
- Light source pairing. The light source is a separate box that talks to the processor over a dedicated link, so automatic brightness and front-panel lamp control depend on both units being present and that cable intact. Confirm which light source is included, that it is the matched unit rather than an approximate substitute, and that the cable ships.
- Lamp module and lamp hours. Confirm the lamp cartridge seats squarely and its contacts are not scorched, and read the lamp-hour display. Establish separately that lamps for it are still supplied — a light source you cannot re-lamp is a shelf ornament.
- Video outputs and small parts. Photograph the rear panel rather than trusting a description, and confirm your monitor, capture station and image-management server accept the connector types and signal formats the unit presents. In the same pass, confirm the keyboard is the type the processor expects, the air pump runs, and the water bottle cap and connector are undamaged.
- Fluid ingress and cooling. Endoscopy racks live next to water: look for tide lines, mineral deposits and corrosion on the top cover, rear panel and feet. Then check the intake filters — one matted with lint means the unit ran hot, and heat ages a power supply.
- Electrical safety and paperwork. Require a leakage current and protective earth test to the standard your biomedical engineering department works to, on the supply the unit will run on. Ask for the printed record alongside the instructions for use, the service manual, the last preventive maintenance entry, and reprocessing instructions for any scopes traveling with it.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Sellers here are US-based, and terms are normally FOB or FCA at a named US point — a dock, a port or an airport — with your forwarder taking the goods onward. Settle the named place and who books carriage early: a tower on a cart is bulky rather than heavy, which shapes the freight decision.
Electrical supply deserves attention here. Read the rated input voltage and mains frequency from each rating plate, compare them against the destination supply, and establish whether the unit is switchable, whether the manufacturer supports that configuration, and whether changing it is a service intervention rather than a plug swap. The mains inlet is normally a standard appliance inlet fitted with a US cordset, so plan on cordsets to your national plug pattern, hospital-grade where your rules demand it. Lamp supply is the parallel question: the light source carries the consumable in this stack, and its lamp should be obtainable through your own channel before the shipment moves.
Documentation that normally travels: a commercial invoice, a packing list, a country-of-origin statement, and whatever instructions for use and service records the seller holds. A transferable manufacturer warranty does not follow a used unit, and a US-market device is not CE marked — US clearance carries no standing in your jurisdiction.
Confirm with your own customs authority and health regulator before you commit:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported at all, and whether an age limit or prior authorization applies.
- Whether this device class must be registered before entry.
- Whether an inspection or conformity assessment is imposed at entry, and by whom.
- Whether you need an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or a Certificate of Exportability — requested from the US side, before the shipment departs.
- Duty and tax treatment for used medical equipment, which often differs from new.
