Used GE OEC 9800 C-Arm
The most traded mobile C-arm on the used market, and the one most likely to arrive as something slightly different from what the listing implied.
The GE OEC 9800 is a mobile fluoroscopy system — a C-arm — used in orthopedics, pain management, podiatry, vascular access, urology and general surgery. It pairs an X-ray tube with an image intensifier on a movable C-shaped arm, so a surgeon can image a patient mid-procedure from almost any angle. It has been in service since the late 1990s, and it remains the single most traded C-arm on the used market: parts, service knowledge and trained users are all widely available, which is exactly why it holds its usefulness long after newer systems arrive.
If you are buying one, the model name alone tells you much less than you would expect. Two units both described as "OEC 9800" can differ in intensifier size, software packages, monitor generation and tube hours — and those differences decide what the system can actually do in your room.
Configuration variants — check which one you are getting

Software packages are the variant question people forget. Vascular, cardiac and subtraction packages are licensed options, and a system that never had the license does not gain it by changing owners. Ask which packages are enabled on the specific unit, in writing, before purchase — not which ones the model supports.

Known failure points on high-hour units
Image intensifier degradation. The single most expensive component and the one that decides whether the system is worth buying. Intensifiers dim and lose contrast gradually with use, and a tired one produces images that look acceptable on the cart monitor and disappointing on a printout. Ask for recent images, not a photograph of the screen.
X-ray tube hours. Tubes are consumable. A system with high accumulated tube time carries a major expense much sooner than its outward condition suggests, and tube replacement can approach the cost of the whole unit.
Monitor cart electronics. On CRT-era carts, monitors are the most common failure and the hardest part to source now. Many units in circulation have been retrofitted with flat panels, which is usually an improvement — confirm which you are getting.
Interconnect cable. The cable between the C-arm and the workstation is thick, heavy, repeatedly rolled over and expensive to replace. Inspect the full length and both connectors, not just the ends.
Mechanical movement. Orbital, wig-wag, horizontal and vertical travel should all move smoothly and hold position under their own weight. Drift or stiffness indicates brake and counterbalance wear, which is repairable but should be priced in.
Pre-purchase inspection checklist
- Confirm intensifier size — 9-inch or 12-inch — from a photograph of the unit, not the listing text
- Ask which software packages are licensed and enabled on that serial number
- Ask for accumulated tube hours and recent sample images
- Confirm the monitor cart is included, and whether monitors are CRT or flat panel
- Inspect the interconnect cable end to end
- Run every axis of movement through full travel and confirm it holds position
- Confirm the footswitch, hand controls and any printer are included
- Check your state's radiation control requirements before the unit ships — X-ray producing equipment generally has to be registered, and the rules are set state by state
- Measure the doorways and the route, not just the destination room
