Valleylab Force FX Electrosurgical Generator
The Force FX is a general-purpose electrosurgical generator: monopolar cutting and coagulation, a bipolar output, and return electrode contact monitoring that inhibits monopolar activation when the return electrode is not making proper contact. It appears steadily on the US secondary market and deserves a proper biomed inspection before use.
What comes to market
Generators leave US facilities when a hospital standardizes on a newer platform, when a surgery center closes, when a service converts to advanced energy devices the older generator does not drive, or when biomed retires a unit because parts have grown difficult. Most that appear will power on — which is why a real incoming inspection matters, since powering on says nothing about output accuracy or leakage.
Watch the labeling. The line originated with Valleylab and now sits within Medtronic's electrosurgical portfolio, and units carry marks from different eras: some badged Valleylab alone, some carrying an intervening parent company's name, with current documentation under Medtronic. Work from the model and serial information on the rear label rather than the front badge, and match it to the right service manual revision — the family carries suffixed variants whose configurations differ.
What arrives in the carton varies. A complete unit comes with its power cord, a footswitch and sometimes a cart; a bare unit is the generator alone. The accessories are what make it usable, so treat the accessory list as part of the specification.
As-removed means decontaminated and boxed with no testing. Function-tested usually means the seller powered it up and activated it. Refurbished or biomed-tested should mean output verification against the service manual plus a documented safety test — ask to see the report.
What to check before buying used
- Verify output with an ESU analyzer. This is the inspection that matters. Load the unit into an electrosurgical analyzer across every mode and setting, and compare the readings against the figures in the service manual for that model. A self-test, an activation tone or a spark against soap proves nothing.
- Electrical safety testing. Run protective earth continuity, enclosure leakage and patient-lead leakage to the standard your facility works to, such as IEC 62353, and confirm output isolation behaves as the service manual describes. Passing function while failing leakage is a rejection.
- Return electrode monitoring. Simulate a return electrode fault with an analyzer or test load and verify the unit inhibits monopolar activation and annunciates. Confirm which pad types it expects: paired with a solid, unsplit pad a monitoring generator will alarm, the usual explanation for a unit sold as faulty.
- Receptacles. Inspect the monopolar, bipolar and patient return receptacles for carbon tracking, melted housings, arc pitting on contacts, and sockets that no longer grip a plug. Burned receptacles mean a repair, not a wipe-down.
- Footswitch and cable. Work each pedal and listen for the switch action. Flex the cable at both strain reliefs, where conductors break, and check the pedal for liquid ingress — footswitches sit in irrigation fluid, and a wet one causes unintended activation.
- Fan, filter and internal dust. With the unit isolated and opened per the service manual, check the fan for free, quiet rotation, clean the filter, and assess dust on the boards and transformer — a tracking hazard around high-tension components. Look for liquid staining, corrosion, bulged capacitors and the smell of overheated insulation.
- Error and fault indications. Note every alarm code, tone and lamp at power-up, then cross-reference the fault list in the service manual. A unit that boots and reports an internal fault needs board-level repair.
- Accessory connector compatibility. Confirm the pencils, bipolar cords, return electrode cables and footswitch you hold physically mate with this unit and are the correct type. Formats are not interchangeable across manufacturers, and an improvised adapter can defeat the monitoring circuit.
- Modes present and enabled. Confirm which cut, coagulation and bipolar modes this unit carries rather than assuming from the family name. The rear label and the service manual are the authority.
- Panel, chassis and mains inlet. Check the membrane panel for delamination and keys that need a hard press, confirm every display segment lights and every setting holds, and look over the enclosure, mains inlet, cord and any cart's casters and pole clamps.
- Service history and parts. Ask for maintenance records, the date of the last electrical safety test and any repair reports. Ask whether the service manual is obtainable and whether calibration needs factory support.
Buying considerations for international buyers
Sellers here operate in the United States, and terms are normally FOB or FCA at a named US point, with your forwarder taking the goods onward. Agree the named place, who books freight and who packs; a generator should travel double-boxed with the footswitch and cables packed separately.
Two things decide whether this unit will serve you at destination. The first is the electrical supply. The generator and its cord set are configured for the North American mains supply, and the rating plate on the rear panel is the only reliable statement of what the unit accepts — some equipment of this era is supply-selectable and some is not. Check the plate against the voltage and mains frequency in your facility, and do not assume a transformer resolves a frequency difference. If reconfiguration is needed, confirm with a qualified engineer that the service manual supports it.
The second is accessories. A generator is inert without pencils, bipolar cords and a continuing supply of matching return electrodes of the type its monitoring circuit expects. Confirm those are obtainable in your market first, and that a biomedical engineer near you can source parts and test the unit periodically.
Documentation ordinarily travels as a commercial invoice, packing list, country-of-origin statement, and whatever instructions for use, service manual extracts and test records the seller holds. The warranty does not follow the unit to a second owner, and a US-market generator carries no EU CE marking. Confirm with your own customs authority and health regulator:
- Whether used or refurbished devices may be imported, and whether an age limit or authorization applies.
- Whether national registration or listing is required before the consignment can clear.
- Whether pre-shipment inspection or a conformity assessment is mandated for equipment of this kind.
- Whether an FDA Certificate to Foreign Government or Certificate of Exportability is needed, requested on the US side before shipment.
- How duty and VAT apply to used medical equipment under your tariff schedule.
