How to buy a used surgical table
On a surgical table, the accessories are frequently worth more than the table — which makes the itemized list the real contract.
Surgical and procedure tables are mechanically simple, extraordinarily long-lived, and among the most rewarding used equipment purchases available. The engineering is durable, the wear is mostly cosmetic, and the failure modes are visible and testable in a way that imaging equipment's simply are not.
There is one way to get it badly wrong, and it is the same way every time.
1. The accessory list is the purchase
Surgical tables live by their attachments. Frames, pads, arm boards, stirrups, traction attachments, imaging tops, rails and positioning accessories are each significant costs, and a table sold without them is a base that needs a long shopping list before it does the work you bought it for.
On a modular system — where a column takes interchangeable tops and segments — this is not a detail; it is the entire transaction. Two systems can share a model name and do completely different work depending on which modules came with them.
Get an itemized list, by part name and quantity, in writing. A photograph of a table tells you nothing about what was in the crates beside it.
2. Test every powered function under load
This is the one mechanical check that matters, and it is easy.
Every powered axis — height, trendelenburg, lateral tilt, back, leg — should run through full travel, in both directions, smoothly, under load, and hold position when it stops. Hesitation, noise, jerking or drift indicates actuator or hydraulic wear. It is repairable, and it should be priced into the purchase rather than found afterwards.
Ask the seller to video the table running through its full range if you cannot be there. A seller who handles tables regularly will not find this an unreasonable request.
3. Pads
Pads compress, split and go missing. They are model-specific, consumable and expensive — often surprisingly so relative to the table.
Inspect every pad, count them against what the table takes, and budget for replacements. On general exam and procedure tables, reupholstery is inexpensive and lets you match a room rather than accept what arrives. On specialist surgical tables, pad sets cost real money and their absence should change what you are willing to pay.
4. Controls
Confirm the hand control and any foot control are included, working, and — on modular systems — actually paired to that column rather than being a generic accessory that arrived in the same box.
Inspect control cables at the strain relief on both ends. Cables fail where they flex.
5. Weight capacity and dimensions
Confirm the table's rated capacity against your patient population, and its dimensions against your room. Both are specification questions with exact answers; neither is worth assuming.
6. Imaging compatibility
If you image on the table, confirm the top is suitable and that clearance works with your C-arm. Radiolucent tops, imaging extensions and C-arm compatibility are specific properties of specific configurations, not general characteristics of surgical tables.
7. Battery, where fitted
Battery-backed tables lose their independence when the battery ages. Ask about battery age and whether the table holds up through a full case without mains power.
8. Freight — the part people underestimate
Surgical tables are heavy, dense and awkward, and this is where the budget surprises live.
- Confirm floor loading at the destination if the table is a substantial one
- Measure every doorway, turn and lift between the truck and the room, not just the destination room
- Confirm whether liftgate or inside delivery is needed — these are separate services arranged in advance, not something a driver can add on arrival
- Confirm the table is crated, not shrink-wrapped to a pallet
The short version
Get the itemized accessory list in writing. Watch it run through full travel under load. Count and inspect the pads. Confirm the controls are present and paired. Then measure the route.
A table that passes those five is very likely to serve for many years, which is what makes this category worth buying used in the first place.
