Used Siemens Arcadis Varic C-Arm

The general-purpose Arcadis, and the one most often mistaken in listings for its higher-output sibling.

The Siemens Arcadis Varic is a mobile fluoroscopy C-arm aimed at general surgical, orthopedic and pain management work. Within the Arcadis family it is the general-purpose system — the Avantic sits above it with a more capable generator and imaging chain intended for vascular and more demanding procedures.

That family relationship is the thing to get right before buying. Varic and Avantic units are frequently confused in used listings, sometimes because a seller is working from paperwork rather than the machine. Confirm the model from the system information screen and the serial number, not from the listing title or a photograph of the badge.

What separates a Varic from an Avantic

Varic Avantic
Intended work General surgical, orthopedic, pain management Vascular and more demanding procedures
Generator output Lower Higher
Typical buyer Ambulatory surgery centers, orthopedic and pain practices Vascular and hybrid settings

If your work is orthopedic, podiatric or pain management, the Varic is very likely the correct machine and paying an Avantic premium buys capability you will not use. If your work is vascular, a Varic will disappoint regardless of its condition.

Known failure points

Image intensifier condition and accumulated tube hours are, as with every C-arm in this class, the two costs that decide whether the purchase makes sense. Neither is visible from the outside and both should be established in writing before purchase.

Interconnect cable damage is common and expensive. Brake and counterbalance wear shows as an axis that will not hold position. Service coverage is the Siemens-specific consideration: confirm that a service provider covering your area supports Arcadis systems before you buy, since the installed base is smaller than the GE OEC population and coverage is correspondingly thinner in some regions.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

  • Verify Varic versus Avantic from the system information screen and serial number
  • Confirm intensifier size from a photograph of the actual unit
  • Ask for accumulated tube hours and exported sample images
  • Confirm DICOM capability if you need it
  • Inspect the interconnect cable along its full run
  • Move every axis through full travel and confirm it holds position
  • Confirm footswitch, hand controls and workstation are included
  • Identify a service provider covering your area before purchase
  • Check your state's radiation control requirements before shipment
