Used and refurbished examination and procedure furniture

Examination and procedure furniture covers powered and manual examination tables, procedure and treatment chairs, phlebotomy chairs, stretchers and gurneys, hospital beds, provider and surgeon stools, medical casework and cabinetry, mayo stands, and equipment and treatment carts.

It is the largest category on the used market by unit count and usually the one where the arithmetic works best. The mechanics are simple and long-lived, the equipment is built to survive years of continuous use, and the things that visibly age on it — vinyl, foam, paint — have nothing to do with whether it works. A twelve-year-old powered exam table with a tired seat cushion is a fully functional table with a cushion problem, and cushions are inexpensive relative to a new table.

What varies most between two units that look identical

Actuator condition on powered units. This is the one functional variable that matters, and it is invisible in a photograph. The actuator is the electric motor and screw assembly that raises, lowers and articulates the table, and it wears. Confirm that every powered axis runs its full range of travel, smoothly, in both directions, under load rather than empty. Hesitation, noise, stalling partway through travel, or a table that drifts down under weight all point to actuator or control board wear. Both are repairable and both should be priced in before purchase rather than discovered afterwards.

Upholstery and foam, which are separate problems. Vinyl splits and scuffs; foam compresses and loses support. A table can have perfect-looking vinyl over collapsed foam, or split vinyl over sound foam. Reupholstery is a straightforward, inexpensive trade and a common part of buying this equipment used — but the two components are priced differently, so ask about both rather than about "condition."

Configuration and fitted options. Exam tables come with different drawer configurations, stirrup styles, pelvic tilt mechanisms, warming drawers, outlet strips and paper roll holders. Procedure chairs differ in armrest style, tilt range and foot section articulation. These are not interchangeable between models and they are not always visible in the photograph. Ask for the configuration by option, not by model.

Control style. Hand control, foot control, side-mounted switch panel or a combination. Controls are model-specific, they are among the more common missing items, and a powered table without its control is not usable until one is sourced.

Weight capacity and dimensions. Rated weight capacity varies substantially within a category and it is a specification, not a guideline. Confirm it, and confirm the footprint and the height range against the room and the work.

What to confirm before buying

• That every powered axis runs full travel smoothly under load, in both directions, and holds position
• Which controls — hand, foot, panel — are included
• Upholstery and foam condition, described separately
• Rated weight capacity and the full height range at both ends
• Which fitted options are present: drawers, stirrups, outlets, warming drawers, paper holders
• Footprint and clearance in the room, including the space the table needs at full articulation
• Electrical requirement, and whether the unit is hardwired or plugs into a standard outlet
• On stretchers and beds, brake and steer function, side rail operation and IV pole fittings
• On casework, exact dimensions and whether plumbing fixtures are included

Freight, delivery and installation

This is the category where freight most often costs more than people plan for, because the equipment palletises badly. An exam table is light for its size and awkward for its weight, which means it is priced on dimensional weight rather than actual weight. A crated exam table and a crated sterilizer of similar mass can differ substantially in freight cost purely because of how much space each occupies on a truck.

Delivery access decides the rest. A receiving dock is straightforward. A ground-level door needs a liftgate. Getting a crated table up a floor is an inside delivery, which is a separate service arranged in advance. Measure every doorway, corner and elevator on the route rather than measuring the destination room and hoping.

Where a practice is being fitted out, buy in groups deliberately. Tables, stools, carts and casework consolidated onto one shipment cost considerably less to move than the same items shipped individually, and this is the category where that difference is largest. Ask sellers whether items can be palletised together before agreeing to buy them one at a time.

Assembly is usually minimal — stirrups, paper holders and stools attach on site — but casework is the exception and should be treated as an installation with a plumber and an electrician scheduled, not as a delivery.
