Used and refurbished veterinary practice equipment
A great deal of equipment from human practice settings crosses into veterinary use without modification, which widens what is worth considering considerably.
Veterinary practice equipment covers veterinary surgery and treatment tables, anesthesia machines and ventilators sized for veterinary use, dental units and dental radiography, radiography and ultrasound, patient monitoring, autoclaves and sterile processing, laboratory equipment, kennels, cages and runs, grooming and treatment tables, and lift tables.
The defining feature of the category is that it is not self-contained. A great deal of equipment built for human practice settings works in veterinary use without modification — monitors, autoclaves, laboratory equipment, ultrasound systems, C-arms and anesthesia machines are all routinely bought from the human market by veterinary practices. That widens what is worth considering substantially, and it is one of the reasons a veterinary practice can equip a surgical suite for materially less than its human-medicine counterpart.
What varies most between two units that look identical
Whether the item is purpose-built for veterinary use or adapted from a human platform. This is the first question in the category, and it is not a quality question — both are legitimate purchases. It is a fit question. Purpose-built veterinary equipment differs in scale, in positioning range, in table surface and drainage, in the restraint and tie-down provisions, and in which accessories will mount. A human surgical table used for veterinary work is a perfectly sound piece of equipment that will not have a V-trough, a grate top or a drain. A listing should say which it is; if it does not, ask.
On veterinary tables, the top and the drainage. Flat top, V-top, grate top or a table with interchangeable tops — this decides what species and what procedures the table suits. Confirm which tops are included, whether the drain and its plumbing are part of the sale, and on lift tables whether the lift runs its full range smoothly under load.
On anesthesia machines, the scale of the delivery system. Veterinary anesthesia frequently runs at flows and tidal volumes well below human practice, which makes the flowmeter range and the ventilator's low end genuinely important rather than incidental. Confirm the flowmeter's lowest usable range, confirm which vaporizers are included and for which agents, confirm the absorber size, and confirm which breathing circuits — rebreathing and non-rebreathing — come with the machine. Scavenging has to be arranged at the destination in veterinary settings exactly as in human ones.
On imaging, the same questions as human equipment plus one. Everything that matters about a used C-arm, radiography system or ultrasound applies here unchanged — tube hours, receptor condition, transducer inventory, licensed packages. The additional question is table and positioning compatibility, and on ultrasound, whether the probe set suits the species and the work: a small-animal abdominal practice and an equine practice want quite different transducers.
On dental units, the compressor and the delivery. Veterinary dental units are usually smaller and often mobile. Confirm compressor capacity and hours, which handpieces are included and their condition, and whether the scaler, polisher and suction are part of the unit or separate.
On kennels and caging, the material and the modularity. Stainless steel, coated steel and fibreglass age very differently. Confirm bank dimensions, whether the units are modular and stackable, and that doors, latches and dividers are complete — latches are the wear item and replacements are model-specific.
What to confirm before buying
- Whether the item is purpose-built veterinary or adapted from a human platform
- On tables, which tops are included, drainage arrangements, and full lift travel under load
- On anesthesia, the flowmeter's low range, included vaporizers and agents, absorber size and circuits
- On imaging, tube hours, receptor condition, licensed packages and transducer suitability for the species
- On monitoring, which parameters are present and whether cuffs and probes suit the size range you treat
- On dental, compressor capacity and hours, and which handpieces and accessories are included
- On caging, material, bank dimensions, modularity, and that latches and dividers are complete
- Electrical, water and drainage requirements against the room
- Your state's requirements for registering X-ray producing equipment, which apply to veterinary settings too
- Whether the manufacturer will support the equipment under a new owner
Freight, delivery and installation
Veterinary equipment ships much like its human-medicine equivalents, with two differences worth planning for.
The first is caging. Kennel and cage banks are large, heavy and awkward, and they are almost always cheaper to ship disassembled. Confirm whether the bank breaks down, whether the fasteners and dividers travel with it, and whether an assembly drawing exists. Reassembling a modular cage bank without the hardware list is slow work.
The second is drainage. Veterinary surgery and treatment tables are frequently plumbed, and a plumbed table is an installation rather than a delivery. Confirm the drain position and the plumbing requirement against the room before the table arrives, and schedule the plumber alongside delivery rather than after it.
Everything else follows the usual pattern. Palletised freight, delivery access decided in advance, and the route measured rather than the destination room. Where a practice is equipping a whole surgical suite or a whole ward at once, consolidate onto as few shipments as possible — this is a category where buying in groups and shipping in groups both work in your favour.
